Any attractions in Riviera Maya?

I am going to Riviera Maya with a large group of people [22] in December. We are staying at an all inclusive resort...I want to go on excursions while I'm there...are there any special attractions in or around Riviera Maya I should check out?

I've traveled to a poor country before so I know all about the safety. I am just interested in attractions so I can look into different excursions.

Thanks.

  1. I would make a special effort to see the Tulum ruins.  They are about 1.5 to to 2 hours south of Cancun.  I would make a special effort to get there early before the heat of the day (really hot !) and the crowds.  We actually took collectivos (12 -15 passenger vans) that run constantly on the highway & just walked across to the ruins.  You probably don't have that option with a large group, but it is the difference in taking a couple hours vs 3/4 of the day.  Xel Ha would also be a good choice if your group is into snorkeling, water activities etc...  They have a website that I am sure you can find.

  2. Tulum. Nice basic samples of Mayan architecture and culture.  Very nice beach on site.  A good half a day excursion.

Xelha. Private park with tons of snorkeling and other activities. Good half a day excursion. http://www.xel-ha.com/

Xcaret.  Private park with tons of activities.  Excellent snorkeling, flowers, shows, beaches, small zoo, butterflies, underground rivers, etc.  This is an all day trip.  They open at 9 or 10 and at night they have a great show that ends around 10 pm. http://www.xcaret.com/

Cenotes. Underground caves.  They are great for snorkeling and or diving (with proper certification.  They have several right off the Riviera Maya main road.  These are just samples. http://www.locogringo.com/past_spotlight...

Playa del Carmen.  Small touristic town.  Plenty of restaurants and shops.  Good beaches.

You could venture inland to Chichen Itza, but that is only suggested if you are a fan of pre-hispanic culture.  Chichen Itza is a fairly good size Mayan site.
