He earned $347 for 2 weeks and $64 came out with FICA, Fed withholding and something else. This seems to be an awful lot. Should he claim 0 or 1 exemption?

  1. $64 is far from an "awful lot."

It may be different where you live, but anywhere from $50-100 is normal.

When I worked last summer I made anywhere from $300-400 every two weeks and had anywhere from $50-$100 taken out each check.

    I was 16 last summer.

  2. Plug it in both ways and see what you think:

  3. FICA should have taken $26.55.  Maybe somewhere around $14-15 for federal income tax.  What was the "something else"?  That sounds like a lot of "something else"!

    He should claim zero allowances.

  4. Just because he is 16 doesn't mean his taxes are any different than anyone else's, If he withholds 1 he will keep more, but get nothing back with the possibility of owing money. If he withholds 0 he will give a little more but get money back at the end of the year. I personally always claim 0 to insure I don't have a surprise bill at tax time but instead a nice little bonus money to buy something nice.
