I'd like to visit a beautiful place nearby Bochum at the end of June. Do you know if there's any lake side or any landscape nearby this town? Some beautiful place in the nature.

  1. It depends what you mean by "nearby".

Not too far away are the Rhine and Mosel valleys. They are very beautiful and have history and legends as well as scenery. They meet at Koblenz, just south of Bonn. From there you can go south up the Rhine past the Lorelei rock and various places with chairlifts that take you up to the hills above the valley, or you can go south-west up the Mosel valley towards Trier, which is a lovely historic town with Roman walls.

If I was to recommend one single place to visit in this area I would choose Burg Eltz, near Cochem in the Mosel Valley. It's an old castle surrounded by woods (you have to walk 2 or 3 km from the road to get there) and it's perfectly preserved. It was built in three parts, added together in different centuries and still belongs to the original aristocratic family. Guides will show you around and tell you lots of interesting things, like the stairs wind to the left so that any intruder into the room would have to burst in with his sword in the left hand, giving a right-hander a disadvantage, and the primitive toilet flush system which used rainwater.

  2. Hattingen is a beautiful little town near Bochum, the old parts of the town are well preserved.

There is Kemnader See nearby as well, there are many bike and walking paths along it and the river that feeds into it, you may take a boat ride on the reservoir as well if you get tired of walking or biking. There are some castle ruins along one walking path by the river near the reservoir.

  3. You can visit the "Baldeneysee" in Essen!

This is a beautiful lake...it's cool there!

Essen is the Cultural City of Europe in 2010 and it's just 15 minutes away from Bochum!

There are a lot of Coal Mines...like "Zeche Zollverein" !
