  1. a HTIB (home theater in a box) is an easy way to get a entry level surround sound system, it'll include a receiver to hook up the speakers and sub (included).  The numbers 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 represents the number of speakers (5, 6, 7) and the .1 represents the sub.

I think the system linked below will fit your needs and it is a top rated system (according to me and consumer reports).  It is a 7.1 system, has two hdmi inputs, one output, and is ipod ready.

Sony HT7100DH is another one that I would recommend.  This is a 5.1 system with two hdmi inputs, one outputs, and ipod ready as well.  This system includes a 5 disc dvd changer.

Both HTIB has optical inputs, and are under $500 (not including tax).  As for loud, I think these systems should suffice.  If needed you can upgrade speakers and subs in the future.
