If you get one make sure its a weighted set (the normal ones are way too light and fall all over the place) and preferably 4 queens.

Chess sets can be very cheap plastic to very ornate and expensive.  Most players use a functional one for playing most of the time and then have others around for decorations.

I know a lot about chess sets, I possess several ones, all regarding my taste.

Soft wood, marble, plastic, hard wood, etc.

Also from many places in the world ( México, US, Europe, etc. ).

Staunton sets are standard tournament ones; so they are the best to get. You can get one at a local store, like wal mart, or google it. You can also get one on ebay

I've bought all kinds of sets.  If you're looking to buy one for actual play you're better off just sticking with the standard Staunton style pieces because they are easy on the eyes and less confusing during a difficult game.  If you want to buy a beautiful artsy-fartsy Japanese set, the one on e-bay looks really nice and seems like a great buy if it is bone as they say.  But I would only use that as a conversation piece, not for play.  For serious play, KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid).  No offence intended.  But really... I've bought and played on the fancy sets and I find myself enjoying the Staunton sets much more.

i prefer stauntan peices personally. There are many hybrids out there, but this is traditionally the most popular. It would help tremendously if you asked a specific question.
