  1. Here is an elementary idea of what a servo motor is. Basically a servo motor has a permanent magnet rotor and the stator needs to know where the magnetic poles are positioned in order to fire the correct phase to move it. The servo motor then has a resolver to give feedback as to what the position is. The advantages of feedback is that it can control the position and the torque of the motor. The speeds are also very easy to control from 0 to full speed. Also if the motor stands still it holds its position. In industry you get many different types and drives, eg Siemens Kollmorgen Pacific Scientific Moog etc. All these sites have details on their products. The link below is for the hobby type.

    The DC types we had, had a magnet ring and hall effect switch for positioning. You can then count the pulses to know exactly how much it moved or how fast it is moving.
