Question:

Any body know how you bathe a hamster?

I usually get a cup of warm water and dip a toothbrush in it, then brush him with the wet toothbrush.

This seems to work, but what are you ideas?

And please don't tell me to get it done professionally because I only bath him for fun, because he likes water. But I still want him clean =D

Thank you!

  1. Bathing a Hamster Can Be Stressfull

Your pet does a great job of keeping himself clean by grooming his coat from paw to tail several times a day—at least! Regular bathing is NOT recommended, as it can be highly stressful for your pet. While you may enjoy a dip in the pool or a warm bath, water is anything but relaxing for your rodent. Remember, hamsters are desert animals, so getting soaked to the skin would be a big shock to your little guy's system. He could easily get a chill. Bathing also strips away the natural oils that keep your hammy's coat in good condition.

If you and your hamster are particularly fastidious, you may want to give him a dish of chinchilla sand, readily available from pet supply stores, in which to roll. Not only will this remove excess oils or dirt from his coat, your pet will probably enjoy a “sandbathing” break every now and then.

  2. follow these instuctions

       1.  Get a bowl containing 2 inches of warm water. Test the temperature with your elbow to make sure it is not too hot or too cold.

    2. Wet the hamster and gently rub it into the dirty area to cleanse it. Take extreme care not to let any water get near the nose, mouth, ears or eyes.

       3. If your hamster has something particularly sticky that’s can’t be cut out in its fur, then you can use shampoo, but it must be baby shampoo. Again, make sure not to get it near the hamster’s face.

       4. Carefully rinse out the shampoo, and place the hamster on a towel.

       5. Dry very carefully; be careful of the hamster’s legs.

       6. Then, get a hairdryer and put it on its lowest setting. Hold it very far from the hamster and always keep your hand between the dryer and the hamster to avoid burning the skin.

       7. Wash your hamster on a warm day if possible to lessen chances of getting a chill.

       8. Make sure the fur is completely dry before returning the hamster to its cage or the shavings will stick to the damp fur.

  3. hamsters are very clean anyways but if your just doing it for fun than you could use a cloth too!! but make sure you dont get any water in there little eyes and ears, and make sure to dry them really really good before putting him back in his cage because its really easy for them to catch a cold!!!(REALLY EASY)!! hope i helped!

  4. It really depends on the type of hamster and its temperament.  I have 5 hamsters.  3 different types and a variety of temperaments.

Dwarf hamsters, are not to be given bathes with water, it is not natural in any way for them.  I give my robo, Petra, a dust bath.  She seems to enjoy it.  You can pick that up at any petstore.

For any other hamster, they can be given a normal bath.  To keep my hamsters clean, I use baby shampoo.  I find it to be cheaper and less irritatating to the hamsters.  The baby powder smell that comes with the hamster shampoo, I find it to be over powering.  The baby shampoo I get has no smell, and is for sensitive skin, and definetally does the job to get my critters nice and clean!

I have an oversized bowl that I fill with about 2.5 to 3 inches of warm water.  I then use a dixie cup to pour wather over the fur and NEVER get their head wet, [can cause ear infections].  I then gently rub in the shampoo into the fur.  And rinse [make sure all shampoo is out of the fur].  I then get a clean and dry towel or wash cloth and gently rub the hamster's fur.  After the initial wetness is gone, I use a brush and brush them [I find it helps dry them quicker].

My hamsters seem to like it as long as I do it properley.  I give my hamsters a bath about twice month [since they are pretty clean animals already].

I really hope this information helped!

  5. you dont bath your hamster they do the work by l*****g themselfs

  6. Well they clean themselves most of the time put if you really want to carefully find a very very shallow open bowl and gently wash him with a light dishcloth.

  7. Sounds like the way you are doing it is good. What I do with my rabbit is I put them on the bathroom floor with a larg bowl of water and they jump right in and play in it.

  8. you arent supposed to wash hamsters, they clean themselves and you clean the cage.

  9. Try with a rag and be very careful around they're ears

  10. if your hamster likes a little fuss why dont you get a damp cloth and pick him up and rub him gently this is a good way of keeping him happy while to clean him (so he doesnt smell)

    i hope this works

  11. I would not bathe him. If he really likes water that much you could get a shallow bowl or plate to let him run his feet in. The stress/coldness could make your hamster very sick.

If he stinks they make hamster perfume, although I'm not sure if that is as safe as it sounds!
