Any body know why my cabbage plants have grown upright to about 4foot?

Gibberellins!

If they immediately shot upward, I'd blame it on the Gremlins- er- I mean Gibberellins!

you're gonna have some big cabbages. they should be ok but maybe best picked when still young and not too tough. You must have some good soil what did you plant them in manure?

Yeah, you should have taken them when they were edible, like when they looked like cabbages!!

They are no use now they are running up to seed..

Your cabbage patch babies are giants, and have to push them up to get under the leaves.
