Question:

Any cat lovers on here?

I returned from a weeks holiday on thursday night to find my beautiful little cat quite distressed and having problems eating. My husband had told me a couple of days previously that she seemed unwell but had thought she was missing me, she has pined in the past then had a miraculous recovery on seeing me. This time it didn't happen, i took her to our vet first thing on friday and he had to put her to sleep - despite being fully up to date with all her innoculations she had feline leukaemia which he thinks she has contracted from a new cat in the neighbourhood - apparently it's widespread again. I didn't think protected cats could get it but they can. I am so sad, i loved her so much, she used to follow me around chatting away to me and sometimes if i ignored her she would grab my leg and bite it and then roll over expecting me to rub her tummy - i always did, i couldn't be cross with her.

  2. I am definitely a cat lover! On January 14th this year, we had to let go of our 14 year old cat called Dino. Even though he could sometimes be vicious or cruel I loved him like a brother and having lived with him since birth, I found it very hard to cope. Unfortunately he had many health problems, but was definitely a true cat of nine lives. He survived being hit by a motorcycle and loosing his meow permanently and his back legs got worse and worse until we decided he was in so much pain that it was unkind to keep him alive for our sake. We wanted him to die peacefully.

Our house was really lonely without the presence of a feline and we considered if we could adopt another animal. We though that Dino would want us to help out another animal who needed a home.

In February we brought home Sooty and Sweepy. They are gorgeous, but they haven't replaced our little guy. I suggest you wait a month or so and then consider re-homing a rescue cat.

Good Luck, and my thoughts are with you at this hard, hard time.

    :)

  3. oh my goodness!

i'm so sorry to hear your tale, my heart goes to you.

have you buried her in the garden?

    cats are beautiful spirits.

our cat was put down after a holiday its was horrid, try to rest a bit and be gentle with yourself, she was poorly, even if you stayed home she would have been poorly.

    with luv xx

  4. Ah that's so sad. My cat does that, meows away at me grabs my leg and gives a friendly bite! I would be so gutted if anything happened to him. Unfortuantely, death comes to us all and animals are certainly a part of the family so it is so upsetting. Just think of the nice times and know that she is no longer ill :o)

  5. iam so sorry to hear of your loss, it is heart breaking  to lose such a good friend. i myself have 3 cats and have lost cats in the past and its like losing a family member, it is very worrying indead that she died from an illness that we are so careful to protect  again each year.

  6. Awwwwwww its a real sad tale.. Im really sorry for you,,, you can stay close to the beautiful cat spirit, and keep it in your heart, and take a moment to think and feel If you are ready to bring another cat into ur life,,,be positive, it was for the best, the cat is now in kitty's heaven...

  7. That's so sad - I'm sorry.

All cats have unique personalities and are irreplaceable and I know how upset you must be.   I've lost cats to illness in the past and it's awful having to have them put to sleep.

I too really thought the FeLV jab protected cats.   Mine are vaccinated and that really worries me and I might consider not using the cattery when we go on holiday this year.  A lot of people don't vaccinate against Leukaemia as the jab itself can in rare cases cause stress to the immune system and  trigger Feline Infectious Peritonitis in some cats.

I would consider getting a rescue cat, but leave it a while (partly because of the disease that may be in the house)

  8. ohhh how terrible...i can understand the pain you feel when you loose a pet...

  9. i am sorry about your cat, its so hard when a 'pet' dies, but i am glad you got to see her to say goodbye, that in itself is a consolation, i didn't know cats could get feline leukaemia despite being innoculated? thats tragic and I am sorry for your loss.. x

edit: no, i don't think you should go straight out and get another cat, you need time to grieve your lost one, its a nice theory but i (personally) think you need time to come to terms with it, and when you can smile about the antics of your old puss cat, ..then maybe think about getting another rescue.. good luck.. x*x

  10. oh that's sad i have a tear :(

  11. Oh, I'm so sorry.  If you need any support or any additional questions, please email me; I'm here for you.  I have ten cats now, and I love them all dearly.  I've lost cats in the past too.  I recommend you bury her in the garden or lawn, wherever would be best, and buy her a little memorial or stone in momory of her.  And again,  I am so sorry about you loss.

  12. Don't feel to pressured by your kids to get a new cat too soon, just wait until you want a new one, I know how it feels to loose a cat especially when you love them so much, but defiantly rescue one. Lots of love from me and my three kitties.

  13. thats is soo sad. im sorry to hear that. cats have a personality of there own. i love my cats as much as i would my own kids sometimes lol..

  14. Hi Helen, I have had cats all my life and could never live without my furry friends. I totally relate to your feelings and am so sad for you. One cat I had was so gentle and loving but was so cruely poisoned...I was broken hearted and cried for two month. I couldn't think of getting another pet because of the pain of losing her and knowing she could never be replaced......and nothing can replace our lost friends but I couldn't bear to be without a pet so eventually went to the rescue place and re-homed two sad little cats who were crying out for love and freedom. Don't repress your pain but consider this, you are capable of giving another unfortunate feline a happy and safe home.... We never forget our special friends and there can never be too many of them. x*x

  15. I'm a cat lover and my beautiful cat of 14 years is old and has arthritis.I think she may dies soon. i understand what your going through as my other caty was run over and i miss him so.

  16. It's a sad thing about outdoor cats, their life expectation is lessened because you can't protect them fully all the time from every danger outside.  You can only do your best, as you did, by protecting her as well as science is able at this time.

We lost a beautiful cat (fluffy silver tabby) to kidney failure 5 months ago and I still "see" her sitting on the end of the bed as she did every morning as soon as she knew we were awake.

    So sorry for you.
