Most of the cheaper options for Rome will be one & two star places or better hotels outside of the center.

If you're looking for cheap and close in Rome, a good option may be the Hotel Romano http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/kolosse... It's very close to the Forum & Colosseum and within walking distance of two metro stops and the Termini train station.

The cheaper options in Florence are mostly one or two star places near the train station or in outlying districts. No elevators, but not a problem unless you have particularly heavy luggage. You might be interested in a stay at a convent or monastery in Italy. These tend to be some of the best lodging bargains available. There are a number of them in Rome. you did not mentioned the budget you have allocated to Hotels. Italy is not cheap and you have to search more to get good deals, search through

Hotels in italy are generally not cheap but I've always found that apartments are a cheaper option. I've tried these guys for both Rome and Florence and were very satisfied. http://www.holiday-velvet.com/rome and http://www.holiday-velvet.com/florence There are b&b's to be found mosly around the train station areas of each city if you're looking for something budget

venere.com is not cheap site always. they have flat rates and no bargain even. When i went to rome, i tried to contact them to get better deal. their support team is not friendly and didn't give me any good deals. so i booked directly with the hotel
