Any cheap hotels in safe areas in NY?

I'm visiting NY for the first time, probably will stay for the second half of september. Got plane tickets etc., yet I still haven't decided on hotel - could anyone please recommend any to me, that is pretty cheap ($150-$200/night) and in safe area (so I could see some of the city at night) ?

I am unfamiliar with the hotel itself, but the location is great.  It is a safe area and close to several attractions, and a short subway ride away from many more.  Book the reservation soon, if they still have any available.

If you do, I can give you some guidance on how to get around, and some places to eat, etc.

A terrific hotel is The Larchmont which is in the heart of Greenwich Village, one of the most interesting neighborhoods in Manhattan.  You will be central to everything.  Some rooms share a common bathroom with other guests and some have private which you pay more for.  i've had many friends stay here.
