  2. I stayed in this hotel in May 2005 - Hotel Grillo Verde in Torre Annunziata. The hotel is about 1.5 kms from Pompeii and is a beautiful hotel but in a really ugly town! Because of this its quite cheap - €79 for a double room. (€39.50 per person). But it is a beautiful hotel - quite luxurious for a 3 star hotel.

Poppea's villa is only 1 km away as well, so its in a good spot for seeing other sites.

  3. yes but even cheap hotels in this area are expensive. we stayed in a small remote hotel 3 star ( not bad) half board on a hill outside sorrento we had to take the bus to sorrento and the train to Pompeii and all the other tourist places ( Popeia villa and others)we also hired a car for 3 days so we could visit peastum ( think thats spelt right) an ancient greek town where the temples are supposed to be better than the temples in greece itself. It is certainly worth a visit. it was a pain having to get bus/trains all the time but the transport is very efficient and cheap.this was 2 years ago and it cost less than 500 in the summer half board and food was excellent

  4. If you're going specifically to see Pompeii, then stay in modern Pompei - a lot of people will stay in Naples or in the surrounding area.  DO NOT STAY IN NAPLES.  It's really not safe, especially lately, and you won't be comfortable (or smart) going out after dark. Modern Pompei has some nice hotels, but the one that many savvy tourists and visiting archaeologists stay at is the Hotel Villa dei Misteri (in English, Villa of the Mysteries Hotel) which is near the main tourist gate of Pompeii (the Porta Marina gate).  It's nice, clean, relatively inexpensive (but not "cheap"), and has a pool.  Otherwise there are some decent places to stay in town - check any Pompeian travel site (and remember that the # of stars in Italy refers to the amenities offered, *not* the quality of the hotel, as we are used to in the US).  There's also a cheap hostel in town, the Casa del Pellegrino, in the main modern Piazza Bartolo Longo.

Staying elsewhere in the area - Sorrento, for example - can be nice but means you have to take a long train ride (with no a/c, so it's *hot* in the summer) at the beginning and end of your day.  Sorrento is really gorgeous, though (not to be missed, IMO, if you have the time), so if you're spending a few days in the area it might be nice to use that as a roosting spot for 3 + days.  If you're just spending one night on the ruins at Pompeii, then stay in town & really enjoy the site.  It's absolutely incomparable.

Also, staying in some of the small towns nearby is often not terribly safe - Ercolano, where ancient Herculaneum is, and Torre Annunziata (Oplontis, the Villa of Poppaea) - are not places that are really set up for tourists to stay in - just to pass through.  I would never feel safe there, so no matter how cheap a room I found, I would never take it.  You'll understand what I mean just by passing through the train stations if you ride the Circumvesuviana train to Pompei from Sorrento or Naples.

    Hope this helps!
