Ok, I am 14 years old and I would like to get a tutor for math from a local college. I am taking Honors Geometry. I know this is a really dumb question, but would you guys actually know what you are doing? I mean I don't need someone to do the work for me, just if I have some problems they can explain it to me. I was thinking of paying about 10-20 dollars an hour.

  1. I'm no longer a college student........I've graduated already.  However, I tutored a few students from time to time in accounting and a few college math courses.  Let me tell you, I did know what I was doing.  In the end, the students had great results.  I don't think someone will be willing to help you if he or she isn't qualified to do the job, especially in math.  I don't think ppl who aren't qualified would want to tutor someone in a subject most ppl detest.  Don't get me wrong, there are some ppl who teach/tutor and don't know what the heck they're doing.  However, you would never know until you sit down with them or see them teach a class.  Thereafter, you make your judgment call on whether this person is qualified to teach or tutor you or not.  So, just give it a try.  If you need a little extra help, by all means take it.  If the person doesn't tutor to you or your parents standards, then find someone who will.  You can also see if your teacher could tutor you after or before school.  If not, give a tutor a try.  Good luck!

  2. I'm not sure what your question really means, but I would call the Dean of Math and Science at your local community college and find out if they have any students who would be willing to work a few hours a day or week.  Most departments have "pre-selected" tutors on hand for college students who need tutoring.  The good thing for you is usually the department has pre-set qualifications to be tutors...  Like minimum GPA and minimum coursework in that particular area.

  3. Check out other sources first. Our high school has peer tutoring. Students who are in honors and AP classes tutor other students needing help. My daughter's strong suit is math. She has tutor other students in math for two years now. Students also have study groups that meet before or after school to help out each other. Working with someone who has the same teacher as you can be an advantage. Most of the honors and AP teachers recommend the students form study groups. Our local library also has tutoring. Talk to your teacher or counselor about getting help.
