  1. Take a big empty pop bottle(plastic ) pour some baking soda in it  Pour some vinegar in stick a cork in it fast, shake a little make sure it is pointed away from you & Boom Pop goes the cork!

  2. Try out electronics, there are pretty cool things that you can come up with. Be Creative.

  3. Well, I suppose this rules out the thermite reaction ....

Something a bit safer is making "slime". This is a chemically inert colloid which is very viscous and kind of fun to play around with if one is really bored. It is a mixture of polyvinyl alcohol and borax. Borax can be found in any grocery store - check the laundry section. Polyvinyl alcohol is used by artists and can be found in an arts and crafts store. This would be dry polyvinyl alcohol, a white powder which takes quite awhile to dissolve in water. To save yourself waiting overnight, a commercial source of a solution of polyvinyl alcohol is ordinary "elmers glue". Now, the experimental part is going to be seeing how much of a borax solution must be mixed with the polyvinyl alcohol solution to get really good slime. I had a recipie somewhere, but I can't find it at the moment.

Of course slime can be colored with food coloring and one intriguing experiment might be trying something known as "chromatography". Mix several colors together and make some slime which is probably going to be an ugly greenish/brown color. Now, place some in a glass and add some uncolored slime on top. What ought to happen is the dye molecules in the colored slime will diffuse into the uncolored slime. However, they will do so at different rates. This will segregate the dyes into separate colored bands and ought to produce a sort of rainbow effect. This is what I expect will happen, but I've never actually tried this, so feel free to experiment.

    Good luck and have fun!

BTW: this would make a great science fair project if it works.
