  1. haven't heard of any damage reported, beyond our nerves

I felt it down in San Diego

remember that while 5.8 is a good jolt, it is much milder than many we have had down here

  2. It was at 11:42 a.m., the epicenter being in Chino Hills. It was a 5.4, originally being 5.8, then lowered to 5.4. It was felt all through Los Angeles, all the way to San Diego. There have been no reported damages or injuries though. The most is some water damage, water pipes bursting, but didn't cause any serious damage. In Anaheim, Disneyland felt it very much, some rides stopped, they had to get off. There was an afterschock of about 3.8.

More information in the link above about the earthquake.

Don't worry though, I'm sure they're fine. The phone lines have indeeed, been having some problems, including cell phones, but should be stable by now.

  3. They actually just downgraded it to a 5.4, which isn't that bad. No major damage. Some things fell off shelves and stuff like that but no injury reports. Don't worry about your kids. I'm a teacher and trust me, the school is actually the safest place for a kid to be during an earthquake. They train us teachers in disaster preparedness, every classroom is required to have an emergency kit with water, food, first aid, etc. Every school has a safety plan and committee in place to handle every type of situation you can imagine. We are trained in earthquake, fire, intruder and even terrorism events. It's pretty extensive so feel assured that your nieces are fine, maybe a little shaken up but they are just fine. In fact, if anything, earthquakes are a great time to teach kids about Geography and Seismic activity. The lines are down because everybody is trying to call and overloading the lines.

  4. The national news says no reports of damage.

  5. It didn't do that much damage in LA or Chino Hills, I think in Ventura County a water pump under ground broke and the water is raising to the ground and starting to sort of flood the streets.

  6. there might be a sink hole in LA on an intersection but thats bout it

  7. It was 5.6 in Chino.  There are no accidents deaths, or injuries reported.  I'm sure everyone got evacuated.  Some cell phone companies are down.

  8. I can't believe it only registered a 5.8...it felt bigger than that! I'm in Los Angeles and our building just ROLLED.

  9. I haven't heard of any major damage. probably some structural damge. There's no reports of major damage in chino hills. Your nieces may have been sent home. i don't know what they do in school, but I'm sure they're fine.

  10. I live in Reno NV

im trying to get ahold of my mother in law but i cant get thru..

    i hope everything it ok

  11. the state's Office of Emergency Services urged people throughout Southern California to cut back on telephone usage, saying a flood of calls after the quake had jammed up phone lines.

"The big message now is don't use telephones or cell phones in Southern California," agency Spokesman Kelly Huston said. "The systems down there are maxed out, and that creates a really dangerous situation when it comes to people who need to call 911 for an emergency."
