Can anyone recommend a nice place to eat that does proper british food?? We used to go to the Harvester restaraunts but their food hasnt been too good in the past few months and havent enjoyed eating there, ( although we have complained we get told oh the chef is new etc) so we are looking to find somewhere that is reasonably priced and has good british food.

  1. Hi there, not sure if you are anywhere near Wickford?  But if you are, you could try the carvery at The Darby Digger pub.  You can have a choice of beef, turkey and gammon, you can have all three if you want!  The chef carves the meat and gives you the Yorkshire puds and stuffing, then you help yourself to the veggies and 2 types of spuds (roasties and new) - theres about 6 or 7 different veggies including, peas, carrots, cauliflower cheese, swede, roasted onions, and a selection of sauces.   it costs 3.50 before 5pm (3.25 for children) Mon-Sat.  Then 4.50 (4.25 kids) after 5pm until 9pm, and on a Sunday its slightly more, I think its about 6.50.

Its lovely, I have been there loads of times.

  2. Manzes Pie and Mash Shop in Walthamstow (London E17) (if they are still there) are one of the original Pie/Mash shops.

  3. I heard their butter is good though.

    Have you tried McDonalds?

DGW, did you noticer I didn't say Burger King

  4. TRY one of the road side snack vans

  5. When u cant think of any where else theres always Mcdonalds makes your day......yum yum

  6. The Moorhen or the Gate House in Harlow aren't bad and are only 15mins up the M11.

  7. Well there is one nice pie & mash restaurant in Southend on sea opposite the Last Post pub

Les M - McDonalds is not British

    C P - McDonalds is not British

  8. Nope.

A friend of mine works/worked for various chain restaurants like Harvester and Brewers Fayre.

They have changed the way they cook, most of their food is now "boil in the bag".

Yep, it's delivered frozen in boxes and thawed in a microwave when you order it.

This is why you have noticed poor quality recently.

If you want decent cooking, you will have to go up west and pay money.

I say you still can't beat pie and mash.

  9. The magic mushroom in Barleylands, Wickford, Essex is good!

Also what about southend? Lots of great resturaunts! Italian ones are best though.

  10. Here is a couple that I'm aware of:

    Canteen

It does simple British food including an amazing breakfast and pies / roasts. However mains tend to be around the £10 mark and sides / smaller dishes range from £5 - £8. I've been for both breakfast and dinner, both times I thoroughly enjoyed it.

    2 Crispin Place, Spitalfields, London, E1 6DW

    St Johns Restaurant

I've not been here but I've heard great things from friends - They practise nose to tail cooking (and their chef has even published a book on the topic) so you will probably see some strange cuts of meat. That said, the food is excellent and very British.

    94-96 Commercial Street, London, E1 6LZ

    Hope that helps!
