Hi, I am pretty sure I have gum disease. First, I noticed my gum was bleeding, then I noticed certain part of my gum tissue were getting swollen. Within days, almost all my gum tissue are swollen. Do you think I can wait till my coming dental appointment? My appointment will be next week. Or should I seek immediate help from other dentist. I am so worried it will get worse ... especially seeing how fast my gum tissue getting swollen just within days. Thanks for the help.

  1. You're probably fine to wait until your dr appointment, especially since its only a week away.

They'll have a hygienist take a look at your gums, and he/she will determine what type of cleaning you need to have done. You may need a deep cleaning, and that will probably take place over several appointments. But, after that you should see some improvement!

    Good luck!

  2. Hi,

First of all we need to establish the origin of your sudden bleeding and swelling on your gums.  Bleeding and swelling has for the most part four origins:  New medications taken (especially heart medication), nutritional deficiency (s.a. Vitamin C), pregnancy, or just simply plaque.  If we can rule out the first three, then you probably just have acute ginigivitis, which can be alleviated with a thorough cleaning or better yet scaling & rootplaning.  Destructive periodontal disease is a chronic disease and progresses slowly.  I don't believe this is the case in your scenario, at least with respect to the symptoms you described.  I think you should be fine until next week, but make sure they do a thorough exam too.  Good luck!

  3. If you can't get to the dentist until next week, rinse several times a day with hot salt water. (1/2 tea spoon to on cup hot water)

Gingivitis is probably what you have.  After your teeth are cleaned it should help.  You should brush  2-3 times a day and floss @ day.

  4. It sounds like you have a very advanced stage of gum disease. If you don't get it treated and let it get worse, all your teeth could eventually fall off. You should go to the dentist as soon as possible.
