Question:

Any distance restrictions on Sport or Ultralight pilots?

I keep seeing people post a distance restriction of "25 miles to your home airport" for ultralights and sport pilots (which I know Sport pilots can exceed that, the cross country requirement is 75 miles) But, I have not been able to find the FAR 103 rule that says this. I know that a 5 gallon limit is on fuel carried, (this may be the confusion) But If anyone has and ACTUAL link to this rule please post it.

I also read an article where a guy traveled in an ultralight to Oshkosh over a two day trip. Thanks for any clarification.

  1. There are no distance restrictions.  We have flown our ultralights on many long distance trips.  Check us out at http://www.freedomfield.com

  2. There are no distance restrictions on the Sport license as long as you stay inside the US ... but there may be issues with using the license outside the US.

With a sport license you can not preform the following:

Fly above 10k feet MSL or in class A airspace

       B,C,D airspace requires additional training

       Can not tow objects

Limit plane to two seater 138 knots or slower

Can not carry passengers for business

Can not use the plane in furtherance of a business

With a private pilot license you can perform most of the items listed above with the exception of Class A airspace requires an instrument rating and carrying passengers for compensation requires a commercial license.

The biggest issue for me as you can not use a sport pilot license for the furtherance of a business.  So in a nutshell, you can not use your sport pilot license as transportation for work related destinations.

If you contact the EAA (www.eaa.org) they would gladly answer any questions you may have.
