  1. An easy guide?  Okay.  First check out the size of the screens you are making it for -- as in resolution.  640x480, 800x600 1280 -- whatever it can scale up or down depending on how concerned you are with clear imagery.  Then use a camera and/or a paint program such as Photoshop or the Gimp to get an image the right size.  If possible choose a web-safe palette for your picture but that can wait.  Save it in a format you can use.  Windows, Gnome and KDE all accept jpegs.  XFCE which I have on my laptop demands png files.  Generally from there you just right click on your background and you can get to a display options menu which will enable you to set this picture as your new background.  It's pretty straightforward and OS-independent.  I've told you all you need to know to get started and you'll learn the rest by doing it.
