Any exercises i can do to inprove my ice skating?

im 13 and ive just started ice skating. i go once a week and i was wondering if annyone can tell me where to find exercises to improve my balance?

  1. i can manage skating.  all i can say is stay still and position your feet in a v-shape.  move them like in rollerskating.  if you think you're falling, put your hands flat on the ice.  bend yourself forward to do that.  lean your body a bit forward.


  2. Hi! I'm 14 and skate once a week (Grade 4 atm.) I generally try and walk everywhere as much as I can, and I eat healthily.  Also try and spare a few minutes a day, particularly the night before your lesson, and try a few of these excersises:

    ~~~Starjumps

    ~~~Sit ups

    ~~~Shoulder stands

    ~~~Press ups

    ~~~Lie on your back and move your legs in a cycling motion

    ~~~Swivel your arms in a circular motion

    ~~~Reach as high as you can, then try and touch your toes as fast as possible.

  3. well since your only starting out in skating you dont wana practice that much, but to improve your balance practice balancing on one foot and lifting that foot higher and higer into a spiral position if you are unsure what a spiral is then search it on google make sure you includ figure skating with it lol. And um just practice all your stuff on a slippery floor with socks [ not like too slippery i ment like not  on carpet lol] good luck with skating!

  4. To improve balance you need to work on your leg muscles and your core muscles the most, although if you plan to continue with skating you need to work on your arms and upper body as well.

    Always work out wearing sneakers that have plenty of ankle support.

    1. Stand on one foot with your other foot held up but not touching your leg, arms outstretched to the side like you would skating, head held up. When you can do that for 30 seconds on each leg, repeat it with your eyes closed. If you have no problem with that, buy a wobble board, a half foam roller, a bosu board, anything that makes balance harder, and repeat the same exercise on there.

    2. Do basic core exercises - crunches, supermans, etc. A strong core makes balance, especially while moving, a lot easier.

    If you choose to use weights, keep it light - if you're only 13 you don't need heavy weights - 3 or 5 lb weights will be fine for now. It's better in this instance to do more reps (15 - 20) with less weight than fewer reps with more weight. Talk to your coach or someone at the rink who specializes in off-ice training to get the best advice for you.

I'm no ice skater, but I do know how to develop muscle strength.  and watching ice skating, it looks like you will need to develop a strong core, meaning your abdominal, lower back, and leg muscles.  a strong core also develops an improved balance because your core will be able to support your upper body.  I would consider developing your workouts to supplement a good ab workout, lower back workout, and leg exercises.

  6. Hi there,

    To start off with, no matter what you go if you feel your going to fall try really really hard not to put your hands out in from of you and land on your hands and knees. It can really jar your hands and knees if you fall hard. So, instead, try landing on your thigh or bum.

    For balancing on one foot I find, if you have your own skates just put them on and practice balancing on one foot. This will deffintaely help on the ice, and remember that even if you can stay balanced on the ground for too long, you will on ice because your moving and that period of time will increase as you are moving.

    Also, just practice basic skating moves (that require lots of balance) on the ground. It has really helped me!

    Doing things like spirals on a scoorter is also good for balance!
