I like the Marlin M60 black with black synthetic stock. What kind of scope should I put on it? Do you think you could shoot a 6" group with a 22 at 200 yards or beyond?

  1. My spouse was given a Model 60 as a present about 31 years ago now. The rifle has had literally thousands and thousands of rounds through it over the years and it still shoots great. It almost never jams and is quite accurate.

We bought a Ruger 10/22 because everyone goes on about how great they are and I know I am going to get a bunch of thumbs down saying this but it's the truth none the less. We got a brand new 10/22 and paid extra for it because it was a limited edition stock, and it was never as accurate as the Model 60. We also noted that it jammed a lot more than the Marlin, no matter what cartridges we tried and no matter what magazines we used. Even the factory mags.

We were quite disappointed with that Ruger, especially as it cost considerably more than a Marlin 60. We sold it and bought a Henry Frontier lever action .22 and have been very happy with that little rifle. I love shooting that little lever gun. However, we still have the Marlin and I see no reason that we will ever part with it. I hear people say it's a crappy rifle but our experience is quite different. The Marlin shoots great and our Ruger was a piece of junk.

  2. At 200 yards the bullet will have dropped by a foot. And beside I'd take a 10/22 any day. I have considered getting a marlin but a gun with detachable magazines will p**s off liberals so much more...

  3. I have my doubts that anyone can make such a group with a .22 rifle, at least not without using a fine target rifle with a match grade barrel and a top quality scope.

Even my Marlin Golden 39-A won't shoot that tight at 200 yards, and there has never been a Model 60 made that was more accurate than a Golden 39-A.

  4. I'm certainly NOT a fan of the Model 60.  Everybody is entitled to their own opinion (and we should all be polite enough to respect that opinion), but the .22 semiauto I trust is the Ruger 10/22.  Kimber makes an extremely good bolt action .22, but they are certainly not cheap.  Savage makes a good, affordable bolt action .22.

Any quality .22 COULD hold a 6" pattern at 200 yards.  Most shooters can't.  If you can, you'll need to dial in your scope to match the trajectory at 200 yards and then pretty much shoot only at that distance.  You'd have a tough time hitting at a distance significantly longer or shorter without rezeroing.
