Any free software to open MS Word 12 documents?

Question

Is there any free and reliable software out there, that can open MS Word documents?

I don't have MS Word, but there are some documents I need to open and read that are in MS Word.

Specifically, some of these are labeled "MS Word 12 document."

I don't know what that means.

Some of the documents, I have been able to open in WordPad.

But, some others, won't open, or if they do, they're just a bunch of code. These seem to be the ones labeled, "MS Word 12 document."

Any suggestions?
