Any free travel reservation software available?

Does anyone know of any free/freeware/open source travel reservation software that can be used by a small, home-based travel agency?

Preferably web/browser-based, very simple and easy to install and use.

Have friend in travel business and he does not know of anything that is available (else he would have tried it!)

No, not a chance. All travel rez software is proprietary by the airlines.  Plus you have to have travel qualifications  (2+ years working full-time in the industry) in order to even be considered.

Best thing you can do  is be an independent agent, work out of your home and be affiliated with a travel agent that will run your tickets and make your bookings, after you've sold it.

Good luck... that's a hard set up to find if you don't already have a clientele.
