  1. Supplies needed:

Prestretched canvas on wood frames or white-primed masonite boards.
    Large bottle of white glue.
    Beach sand.
Small bags of pebbles or gravel.
Several tubes of artists watercolor OR tubes of acrylic.
    Polyurethane aerosol spray.

THIS IS FOR A TEXTURAL SAND PAINTING on CANVAS.

Apply the white glue with a house paint brush onto different sections of the canvas.  You can dye the sand with thinned artists acrylic by mixing the acrylic and sand in small jars.  Allow the dyed sand to "air dry" or place the dyed sand on foil-lined cookie sheets and dry them in your oven at low temperature.  Scoop up all the dyed sand and place the sand in small plastic containers.  This dyed sand will be your painting medium.  Use different textures of sand, fine, medium, course, etc.

Sketch out your concept onto the canvas with charcoal or light pencil.

Apply the white glue with a various sized paint brushes onto different sections of the canvas.  Apply the sand to your drawing and allow each layer to dry.  Build up various layers and play with the textures and colors.  You could even build a textural concept first with no color, then go back over it with thinned acrylic or an airbrush.  Have fun with it and allow the sand textures and color to work with your concept.
