Greetings, I am a long time martial artist who has left the art over the last 6-7 years (due to moving alot and new jobs) and I am looking for a new center to train at.

What I'm looking for: A honorable and disiplined school thats not there for 'exercise' or 'after school activies.' I'm looking for a Master (or Mistress) that deserves the devotion of their students.

I have no desire to be coddled and I'm interested in learning as close to the real art as possible without the watered down 'Americanized' sport changes.

  1. In addition to "Sensei" advice:

check your local yellow pages or phone book,  look for the all the available schools your area has to offer.

If you're not in the area yet,  call someone you know in the local area to scan, mail or list the martial arts section on the yellow page and have them sent to you.

The reason I always suggest to look in the phone book first is due to the fact you're pretty much searching for a school in your local area. You may even find one a few blocks down from you.  Using the phone book as your first step will make your search faster and easier because all the information such address and phone number are available for you right there.

Secondly, if you are not having any success with this type search, After all the vigorous research on styles and decided on a particular style of martial arts. Try contacting an organization of that particular style on the internet and ask if they can refer schools or certified instructors available in your local area.

Hope this helps and good luck with your search.

  2. Whatever you do, stay away from shaolin-do. That is one of the biggest scams in martial arts.

Greg greene also looks like he knows nothing. He keeps having pictures of himself taken in the same open-arm, claw nonsense. He is a phoney.

The only legitimate school I know of is Wah Lum. Chan Pui is the only Wah Lum Master in the US. Everyone here is under him - he is the real deal. His students are very good.

Or, you can go to China Town - every city has one, and veeerrry carefully look around for signs of any martial arts activity. You might find someone who teaches out of a dim, leaky basement. Look real good because they are hard to find.
