  1. what are you using it for?

    general rule of thumb

    quad core (fastest u can afford) - intel/amd does not matter

    4gb ram

    big hard drive

    but if you play games its a different set of priorities, particularly the video card

    and yes, xp is generally regarded as a more hassle-free os. (one third of new pcs are downgraded from vista to xp according to some statistics that came out last week)

  2. Regarding PC Specs, it really depends on how you'll be using your computer.  Is the computer for gaming?  Video Editing?  Normal use like browsing and email?  These all have very different requirements.

    where you can check out components.  There are user comments too that help make the proper decisions.

    XP vs. Vista...I have no experience w/Vista yet, but it's been out long enough where many of the bugs, I'm confident, have been worked out.  I'll stick w/XP for now but will go to Vista on my next build.
