  1. If you are just cruising around or trying to lose a bit of weight like me, I would go to Wal-Mart and get the bike I got. It is a Sierra Quest. It was $30. It was nicer than the Roadmaster I bought before. I am no pro with bikes but I know I have had mine for a while and I ride mine every night and it's great!

  2. If I got a new bike every time my wheel needed to be trued (about yearly) and every time I had a flat (less often) I'd be broke. That's because while there are excellent used bikes in your price range if you know where to get a good honest deal but why not learn to fix it?

Tires go flat, often. Learn to fix them, carry the tools you need to fix them and most important learn to prevent it. Number one cause is not inflating your tires.

I suggest after you fix your flat go to your local bike shop and get a floor pump. Pump the tires to the proper pressure before every ride.

As for the spoke, find a local shop to true your wheel. Once that's done get a truing stand and learn how to use it.

We all crave new bikes, but this is like getting a new car because your car needs an oil change.

Take care of your bike and it will take care of you. Besides it's fun and cool having the skills 8-)

But if you have a really nice classic steel lugged frame like '70's Raleigh and Motobecane then when your tire is flat your bike is toast, please toss your classic steel lugged frames that only need minor repair but you can't figure out how to do it  in my neighborhood so I get another one. 8-)

  3. yeaa! the new schwans are magnificant! are love them

  4. Go somewhere else to get a flat fixed and a spoke (and minor wheel truing) you are being ripped off.

No bike shop in their right mind would charge that much. Replace the tube yourself. It'll cost you $5 for the tube. A spoke costs $1. If the flat and broken spoke are on the same wheel, the total cost for a shop to repair should be around $30 total.

  5. ...... and the tires will never go flat on a new bike?   Tires and tubes wear out or get cut by glass on the road.     Its normal.  I wear out several tires a year on the two bikes I use regularly.

I just had to replace my MTB's front tire after a flat.  The tire cost me $12.99, the tube $3.49.

If a spoke had broken, I'd just grab another out of my junk box, or as MR says, spend a buck for a new one.

Bike repair really isn that hard or expensive if you have the patience to figure it out..... fixing flats is something you should know how to do anyway if you ride regularly.  What happens if you get a flat 20 miles from home?
