At my school we have a thing called a preschool playgroup. I'm in charge of the dramatic play center this week and I need an activity for the kids. All the kids are between the ages of 3 and 4. I have limited materials and the theme is basically a Bob the Builder kind of thing, but any ideas are welcome. thanks =]

  1. Can you go to Goodwill and pick up a hard hat or two?  Do clean the up.  Toy or paper hammers and other props should work if you can cover them in clear contact paper or laminate.  Paint brushes and sponges are child friendly.  Could they paint something with water or water with food coloring added?  Coudl you make rocks out of duct tape or masking tape for play trucks to mover around.  Have a container that the trucks could play in?  Mix a little glue with potting soil and glue it to the bottom.  Hot water should take the soil out later.  Have orange paper to make traffic cones out of?  Wrapping orange paper around paper towels still wrapped in their plastic might give you a barrel shape.

  2. the best thing you can do is get a bob the builder book and read it for the children. try to pick a book that you have the things you need to get the children to act it out. if you don't have a puppet theater just get one of the tables and put it on it side and get the kids to go behind the table and act out the story its a lot of fun for the children especially if you let them do their own puppets for the play.

  3. have a trivia game about bob the builder. aslo, you could write a story about bob the builder or find one and do a mad lib with them... you know...here's an example of a mad lib:

The made-up name is an animal that has color fur with color spots on its body part (plural) and body part (plural). Its tail is shaped like a(n) singular noun which it uses to present tense verb plural noun. An adult made-up name may weigh more than large number pounds and stand over large number feet high.

The made-up name can be found only in country and country. Although its favorite food is food (plural), it also likes to eat plural noun. If you ever see a(n) made-up name, be sure not to ever sing “favorite song.” That song makes it adjective. Instead, give it a few food (plural) and be on your way.

  4. read a bob the builder book then let the kids act it out by pretending to be the charch ters of the story

  5. If it's "the dramatic play center" I would get some clothes and props that are building appropriate. Like hard hats, little tool belts, plaid button up shirts like bob wears (good will...it's ok if they are a bit big, it's like playing dress-up in daddy's clothes). Dress your self up as the project supervisor. Make up some pretend blue prints for a building project and assign all the kids roles in the building. Get some big block (or just make some out of boxes). Some kids are on the moving crew. Other kids are on the placing crew. Run it just like a mini constuction site. Some toy tools like hammers, s***w drivers, tape measures (could be fun if supervised) would add to the whole thing.

To encourage the dramatics, you could make some of the blocks bigger and tell the kids it's "really heavy" and have several of them play that they have to work together to lift this "heavy" block and other things like that.

This sort of activity would show things like roles and teamwork and how a big project can get done if everyone does their little job and works together.

  6. play dress up or cooking.

  7. well you can have the kids draw their own pictures of bob the builder & the construction site

or you can all watch a bob the builder movie but i dont think the girls would enjoy that

or you can play with like bulldozzers, etc.

  8. I love the dress up ideas but why not get sets of different blocks like wood blocks, giant Lego's, Lincoln logs, or other building blocks.  See who can build the tallest building or the fastest building built or things like that.  Then there is always the fun of demolition.  Let them be wreckers and tear them down and start again.

  9. Have some stencils that you can make yourself of hammers, s***w drivers, pliers etc. and a supply of card stock or heavy paper for the children to make their own tools. Then have them make a holder from paper and a tool belt from the paper to wear the tools. Or they could make a tool box from a box. You could also have card board boxes so the children could build their own construction.  Have as many books of Bob the builder and other construction books around the area. The children will provide their own drama to act out in the area. Let them enjoy and have fun.
