  1. In Quebec city, look for Ashton (see the list of restaurants : http://www.chez-ashton.com/restaurants2.... )

    well known for their poutine.

Also, in all the province of Quebec (like Quebec city, Montreal, even in small towns) look for little snack/burgers places. If they seem to be crowdy at noon or around 6:30 PM, you have many chances to have the best poutine. Note, if you're new to Quebec, the Cafés, Tim Horton and sandwiches places are less to offer poutine, you need usually burger places.

  2. Well I am a former chef and lived in Montreal and visited Quebec City a number of time, and particularly on every corner in every neighbourhood there is a place, in Montreal there are a chain of places that specialize in it, Lafleur hot stores make a good one, the restaurant also.

The best is a judgement call, alot depends on the fries, type of sauce and cheese curds, some add other things and there are variations with other ingredients and sauces, I would say the Lafleur one was my fav, I have a Lafleur Hot Dog store on the corner, a poutine with 2 small chiens chaud Michigan style and a root beer was my meal on the way home from work some nights.

  3. Go To La Belle Province Or Chez Ma Taunte on fleury

  4. Mmmmmmm.....poutine… there's many good places in Montreal. I can’t even pick one because they are all differently GOOD! [Sorry I haven’t been to Quebec City that much, so don’t know what’s good there.]

I agree with David H., it all depends on the fries, type of sauce and cheese curds…and it is your call to decide…whether you like thicker cut of fries to thinner cut, cheese curds to shredded cheese, regular brown gravy to pepper gravy. I say try them all! :p yum!

Here are some places I think you should check out and decide for yourself.

This place has been around for many many years…been going since I was a kid. Simple and good. Fresh cut fries, cheese curds and brown gravy! And don’t forget to have some hot dogs as well!

Their fries are sooo crispy and good that sometimes you don’t want to make them into a poutine….this place offers many types of dipping sauces as well.

You want variety of poutines, this is the place to be! Offering 25 types of poutines, in two sizes. Plus this restaurant is open 24hrs. If you have a craving 3 in the morning, you know where to go! I have only tried 5 and so far I haven’t been disappointed.

Now if you want to try a shee-shee-foo-foo kind of  poutine, you will have to go to

http://www.restaurantaupieddecochon.ca/i... for a Foie gras poutine! It’s only $23! ;) This is a pretty nice French restaurant, not too crazy about foie gras though. It’s weird…I like pâté, chopped liver, fried liver…but the foie gras…Mmm not for me. My friend enjoyed the poutine though.

    Happy Eating! :-D

  5. Ashton is definitely the most widely known restaurant that serves poutine.

It's only in Quebec City (and suburbs), because everything is very fresh. As an exemple, they buy their fresh potatoes from L'ile d'Orleans (about 15minutes drives), and it's cut every day right in their restaurant. So no freezer taste :P

But McDo, KFC, Burger King.. they all have poutine.. But it's not as good.

A lot of small restaurant (you know, the kind only open in summer ?) makes good poutine too.

One important thing.. Whatever you hear.. NEVER.. NEVER go to La Belle Province. It's not good, it's too greasy... Only place I couldn't finish a poutine. (or anything else, anyway.)

  6. Yummy yet fattening!

The Pool Room on Saint-Laurent Boulevard (just off Sainte-Catherine Street) used to serve the best poutine and hot dogs in Montreal.

I sure hope they still do!

    Are they even still open?

  7. They sell some at a lot of places. ( you can even get one at mcdonalds)

also, labelle province A&W, other fast food places, etc.

From my experiences, I can't really decide which one is the "best", but you shouldn't have a hard time finding some :P
