  1. Which country did they move to and when did they get there? That would influence the answer to your question because Ancestry.com is great for the US and Britain, but for countries like France, Canada and Australia there are a lot of better ones.

  2. Please be aware that with 'free trials' you often have to give your credit card details, then remember to advise the company that you want to unsubscribe BEFORE the end of the trial date. If you don't, they will start charging you from that date, then it is not easy to get it stopped and/or your money back.

If you have some idea as to where your ancestors came from, then simply search on the net for research groups that cover those areas. e.g. if you want to look in Ireland, there are numerous Irish research groups within Yahoo, that are comprised of people with the same, or similar interests, who are willing to help each other. What they don't promise, is that you give a name, such as Murphy from Ireland, and expect someone to provide you with a family tree.

What they will do, is advise you where you can find sites that will tell you where the majority of Murphys lived, and help you from there on.

One of the best sites for Irish research is

    http://www.from-ireland.net/  and a corresponding research group,    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Y-IRL/

You can find similar links for most countries from

    http://www.cyndislist.com/

Start your research with what you know, starting with yourself, then back to your parents, grandparents, etc. Good luck.

  3. www.ancestry.com

  4. You might try Ancestry.com or Root Web.  I have used Ancestry.com, it offers a free 14 day trial.  It has lots of sources and is easy to you.

  5. Yeah, I too recommend ancestry.com. Or, you can visit your local library because most offer a genealogy service where you can use their sources. Good luck.
