I'm completely open to work that involves learning to do new tasks, meeting and associating with people, etc. However, I'm not too fond of volunteering in a library. :/

  1. volunteer at a soup kitchen, kennel, retirement community, food bank, hospital.. there are many options out there!

  2. here's something I found that might help you:

    http://www.volunteermatch.org/

  3. Do you have a free community newspaper

The one I worked for was a charity

I left in search of paid work.

    But I enjoyed it,

Got to review films at the cinema

Took photos of various community events

    and reported on them

You might deal with member of the public daily... or not.

volunteer match is awesome and very helpful.

I work in the non-profit sector of social work and theres infinate opportunities.

check out your local animal shelters, domestic violence agencies/shelters, if you like children, special needs school, mentoring with orgs such as: BBBS-Big Brothers, Big Sister, Boys & Girls Club and CASA (are located in every major city)

all helpful and very rewarding. Congrats to you for wanting to give back!
