Any good tips/guidelines for playing blitz/bullet chess?

  1. Learn good sidelines that will throw your opponent off. Any move that will make opponent think early will help later. Try to move towards familiar endgame situations that you know.


  2. Personally I avoid the stuff like the plague, but some people enjoy it.  Personally, I would advise being extremely well versed in your own white opening, and being well prepared for both e4 and d4 openings.

    Blitz chess has some skill, but when it comes to bullet, you really need to know your stuff to have a chance.  I would recommend playing lots of slower games g15+ to develop your thinking skills.  Blitz is about thinking fast, if you don't know *how* to think in the first place though, there is no way to speed your self up.

  4. 1- Study openings.

    2- It's nice to know some "trick" shots to use if they come up, but don't rely on them; If your opponent is aware of them, you'll have to fall back on solid play.

    3- When in doubt, exchange.

    4- Know your basic endgames.
