Any guesses to what this pain I experience while running could be?

All my life, I have experienced a strange pain just below my ribs while running, and it seems to intensify the more deeply I breathe. A deep breath is agonizing while shallow breaths cause very little pain. However, if I stretch out fully while filling my lungs as much as I am able, all of the sudden there is a pop and the pain goes away completely. Because I do not even need to break stride to fix this, it has never been a big concern for me. But when I mention this to others, they seem concerned that this pop may be somehow damaging. I doubt I am causing any real damage to myself since I have been handling it this way for years and have never experienced soreness after, but I am curious about what this pain may actually be. while looking up other answers, I have come across the "Stitch in the side" questions, and while this pain is in the same location, no one has made mention of curing the pain in the same way I do. I am not sure if it is the same thing or not.

  1. Yeah, it's probably a side stitch. I used to get them all the time. This guy on my team said it's probably b/c i was "breathing like i was having an asthma attack" (which i was close to.) Anyway, people always reccomend changes in your breathing. In through your nose and out through your mouth, though i've found that after running a while you're breathing anyway you can to just get some air.

I've also found that when i drink a lot before i run, i get one. I usually only drink during practice if we're running when it's really humid. But i drink like literally 2-3 bottles of water during school hours. I wouldn't really reccomend this to you b/c i know i probably shouldn't even be doing it. So, yeah, just try changing your breathing. And yes, i've found that stretching it out and slowing down my breathing does help.

Also, if you're new to running it could just be you're not used to it yet. At least, that's what my old phys ed teacher told me.

    Good luck = )
