Question:

Any harm in bending back a chainring?

I had an accident a few weeks back the large chainring on my road bike is very slightly bent. I just want to make sure it should be OK to bend it back, or will that affect the structural integrity at all. It's still functionable, mind.

thanks for any advice.

  1. I have my chain ring bent by few millimeters but it's still work to me and I can change gears smoothly.

I just don't know what's the sustained damage of your chainring if it's out of alignment too much it will be harder for you to change gears or it better to realigned it in a machine shop or brought a new one...

  2. it shouldnt be a problem as long a u don't over bend it and have to bend it back b/c that will make it weaker

  3. nah, it shouldnt compromise the integrity of the chainwheel as long as its just a small bend.

  4. NEVER heat a chainring!

Actually, there are tools made especially for truing chainrings- I have one or two- but you can do it equally well with an adjustable wrench closed over the ring. Take your time and bend it back carefully.

  5. None whatsoever.  I have bent mine back several times.

A few things to keep in mind.

    1. did you kink your chain when you bent your ring?

    2. if your chainring is aluminum, it will fatigue more rapidly than steel from bending.

regardless, you have nothing to lose as yours is already our of line.

  6. A severe buckle on a steel chainring may require some heat on bending or it may fracture!

If, as you say, "it's still functionable" - then it should be ok to gently nudge it back into shape.

I would only consider replacement, if shifting or your chain-line is affected.

    Hope its ok though.

EDIT: OK Mirage!! My knowledge of steel does centre around stainless!  - If you have an objection to heating the stuff chainrings are made from, I would be interested to find out.

  7. i don' think so. but i think you should check with a bicycle expert.
