My son is a few months away from 3 and he DOES NOT want to pottytrain! He has two older brothers you would think he would want to because they do it? We have tried pull ups and underwear.. he doesnt want either.. shouldnt they be trained by 3? He HATES wearing a diaper he rather be naked! haha! he pretends and says "peeeee" and says "ok im done" What should I do? Or should I just not worry about it and let him do it on his own?

  1. boys do take longer and can regress more often it seems especially after big events such as surgeries, new siblings, etc...

starting preschool really helped my son but we tried many things here they are

at first we kept a small potty downstairs and let him run around in a pull up or underwear after he was trained with that though it was hard to keep him trained when he was fully clothed so I don't know if that was the best idea but it started the process keep in mind during our training process which took a long time he had several big events happen in his life and regressed a few times.

the final thing we did was a chart--we had done this before but this time we made a chart on one side we put dates and on the other side we put the days of the week---

we also had  a reward bag for daily prizes with small toys for instance I got a pack of 6 cars for $1 at the dollar store and other packs of toys or whatever

he got a sticker on his chart for pees and poops we made note of the time and type of all accidents and successful attempts a lot of it is learning his schedule.  If he had an accident he got and X and he did not receive a reward for the day.

At first give him something very small each time--someone suggested an m & m--the first time he goes through the whole day and gets his car or whatever he will be excited and want to do it every day.

I agree pull ups make it harder and should be used when out in public not at home.

Get a bigger present and wrap it and put it on top of the fridge explain to him that is what he gets when he can go a whole week.

You can also do things like a trip to chuckee cheese for a month etc... by this time it is pretty much natural and you are done with training process---

    good luck..

make sure and take him upon waking before and after meals before he goes to bed before and after school or day care and every few hours if there is time in between.

  2. Have you tried to reward him for his going potty in the toilet?  You could have a chart and everytime he goes potty he gets 2 stickers, and when he doesnt he gets one taken off.  That way it doesnt discourage him too much.  Then when he gets to the end he gets to go pick out a toy for him and the two other kids.  Then the other boys dont feel bad either but he is being rewarded for it.  You could also sing a potty song with him to help him relax when he is on the toilet. When he goes you could dance and sing about what a big boy he is.  That will help his confidence!

Good Luck to you! I am not to the potty training part yet with my son but I know that rewards and confidence help him out alot.

  3. I don't think leaving him to do it on his own is a good idea, as the daytime diaper will become a bigger and bigger issue as he get's older.  Whether you insist that he wears underwear or let him go naked is something you'll have to decide.

    Here's some tips:

    1.  Offer a little reward.  We used M&M's.

    2.  Take him to buy his own underwear, so he can choose the picture/design.

    3.  Don't make him feel under pressure while he's going to the toilet, just require him to stay there for 1 minute.  Too much encouragement can make him tense, which makes it harder to go.  Save the encouragement for when he's done it.

    4.  Put some confetti in the toilet bowl for him to aim at.

    5.  Don't use pullups, they don't help with toilet training at all.  The only use for them is when you're out somewhere and cannot afford for him to have an accident.

    6.  When he has an accident, don't scold him, just cheerfully say (or ask) where the "peeeee" was meant to go.

  4. This is what I did with my son. He will be 3 in October. I take him to go pee first thing in the morning when he wakes up. Then he gets to pick out his underwear. Then I take him to the bathroom at least once an hour to at least try to go. If he goes, he gets a sticker for his "potty chart". I have made a chart with each day of the week on it, and each time he goes pee on the potty he gets a sticker to put on there, and if he goes p**p, he gets a sticker and a treat (a few m&ms or something like that). It has worked wonders, and I hardly ever have to ask him if he needs to go, because now he is coming to me saying "have to go potty mom, and i get a sticker". Good luck!

  5. try takin ghim shopping .. take him and show him all the cool undies get him excited about wearing his undies tell him they are special undies and usually they wont want to talk them off

  6. How long did you try the underwear? My son was 3years and 3 months when he was potty trained. We did the underwear thing and took him to the potty every hour to try. It took about a week before he got the idea that he underwear made him wet and he didn't like it. So he started to pee in the potty and about 3 weeks later the pooping in the potty came. and after 6 months he is going strong doesn't even pee the bed at night anymore.

I used a chart too. He would get a star for every pee or p**p and when he got to ten he would get a new thomas the train toy. But if he had an accident one would be taken away.

  7. i work in a daycare and have 3 kids  the only thing that i can tell you is that boys take longer to potty train and when they are ready you will know and they will start on their own but what also helped me is buying them there favorite cartoon character underwear and they will want to wear them and also when they go potty make it a big deal and tell them how proud you are of them dont show any kind of negative emotions...be patient .
