Im really sick and 19wks pregnant, i cant stop coughing, my nose wont stop running, and i have the worse body aches.

I seen the doc today and i have a infection in my throat and all around that area, forgot what she called it, but anyway, can being sick like this harm the baby at all? i was worried the coughing which tightens all my abdomen, could cause any problems?

  1. You and the baby should be just fine. To ease your mind and body you should probably rest as much as possible.

  2. no you should be fine just keep hydrated and make sure you eat enough

  3. Agree - at 19 weeks, the cough should not be an issue for the baby, but it does make life difficult for you.  Plain Luden's cough drops may help ease some of the irritation.  The source of most coughing is post-nasal related.  Keep you sinuses clear with a saline spray.  You can use it a zillion times a day!  And if you do it pretty often, it does help. (Wipe the bottle with clean tissue after each use)

GARGLE with salt water (about a tsp to 8 ounces of warm water) to clear the gunk out of your throat;  Again, you can do this fairly often.

If you get so congested you feel like you are smothering, your doctor may approve limited use of sudafed at this stage of your pregnancy.  Mine did and I was so grateful to get relief, and it had no effect on either of my kids.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  4. Being sick will not affect your baby at all.

It is, however, pretty horrible for you right now.  You should ask your doc if she can give you antibiotics for the infection, there are antibiotics which are safe for use during pregnancy.

Be very careful about what over-the-counter medications you use, as most of them are not safe during pregnancy.  Speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

  5. No you should be fine. The coughing may hurt but it doesn't hurt he baby!

  6. No, the only coughing that can harm the baby is whooping cough, which can cause coughing severe enough to cause your water to break.
