I'm just starting to get a cold and the sore throat is killing me! Lozenges don't often soothe enough for me, are there any home remedies which will reduce the symptoms of my cold and possibly eliminate or reduce my sore sore throat?

Thanks!

  1. I find that hydrogen peroxide works pretty well as a gargle when diluted to the proper proportion.  Not only is it an oxidizing agent which aides in the removal stains from your teeth but it also helps to supress mucuous.  Just make sure to dilute and not to swallow.  Salt water works o.k. but not as well.

I seem to get sore throats everytime the weather changes.  I try to thin the mucuous and drink a mixture of both hot and cold.  Hot for soothing and cold to keep swelling down as that can be what causes pain in throat and tonsils.  Another thing that works for me although I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for everyone is shots of crown royal.

  2. I agree with the honey and lemon teas  which need to be slowly sipped.

Another old remedy is to dissolve an asprin or disprin and gargle  for a few minutes.  I have tried a few things in desperation and I personally believe this is the best remedy for me when my throat get that sore.

Depending on your symptions you could also try so aromatherapy blends to assits with the cold.

Eucalyptus oil is excellent for colds and can assist greatly with breathing. This can be placed on a tissue  and inhalded or in a aromatherapy burner or diffuser.

Another excellent form of natural therapy is Reiki,  if you know someone who coulc send you some it would be most beneficial.

Its your decision on how to relieve your sore throat but if it hangs around for two long you may need to see the doctor.

    Cheers to improved health

    Take care!

  3. drinking warm lemon and honey, and gargle with salt water, it really helps!

  4. hot water with lots of honey and lemon, drink this as much as you can. get well soon!

  5. Gargle with salt water. Make a tea of honey and lemon. Rub your throat with lavender oil. Drink echinacea tea. Take a bath with diaphoretic herbs (make you sweat) like catnip or elder.

  6. It was recently reported that gargling with your own Uric Acid (urine) will eliminate a sore throat pain.  The Portuguese used to gargle with urine also.  However if you do decide to use this home remedy, you should check yourself into a mental hospital.

  7. suck on honey licorice.

Within a couple of hours your throat start to feel better.

  8. gurgle salt water

  9. Basil leaves with ginger is very good, but it has to be taken for at least a week, twice daily.

But the simplest remedy that has always helped me is to drink tepid water instead of cold water whenever I  feel thirsty. I keep hot water in a thermos flask on my bedside table, and only drink out of it.

  10. Something you should know about honey (that others have mentioned) is that it must be RAW (not heat or press filtered) ...otherwise the good anti virus and anti bacteria and proactive healing properties are destroyed and all you get is a tasty drink loaded with sugar.

Raw honey is used now as a medical device to heal burns and treat infections that antibiotics can't cure.

I've also found a single super large dose of garlic and vitamin C can often kick a cold.

Other things to do are take echinacea (it was the most prescribed treatment for infection until penicillin was discovered), olive leaf extract is also useful at fighting viruses.

  11. My mom always had ua gargle with warm salt water.
