When just water is in the toilet bowl it flushes fine. When I add toilet paper the toilet starts to get stopped up. I then have to plunge the toilet. Any ideas for something I can do at home to fix my toilet with out going to the store?

  1. Toilet flushing problems can be caused by different things.

Is the vent pipe plugged by a nest of something or other?

Is there enough flushing water coming into the bowl at a quick enough rate to move the existing effluent down the drain.  It needs a certain help from timed turbulence and gravity liquid motion.

The flapper valve inside the toilet tank may be defective, hanging up so as to not allow the gush or the tank may not be filling enough to do that gush.

It is possible that you have a toy in the drain below your toilet.  Many a matchbox car has done this!  lol

Objects from a cabinet or a cell phone in that toilet can cause problems, lol.

Or there may be a problem in your septic lines or town sewage system roots or collapse..or in the graduation of angle of the drainage pipes changing from frost heaving or ground changes...or a septic tank may have too many solids built up?

There are products that can break down the solids and get the bacterial action moving again.  You can try some ground up vegetables and fruits, like a smoothie, to clear the drain.

Hope I gave you some ueseful ideas.  Can be irritating.

  2. Has it always been like that? Assuming you haven't begun delivering more than it can handle, and it's a new problem, you may have roots invading the main waste line somewhere on the way to the street. Or, if it's an old clay line, it may have become partly collapsed. Or there a partial blockage somewhere. Or your vent pipe has become blocked and is not longer admitting air. If it's a reasonably modern system in a house, you may find a clean-out somewhere under the house or near by. It will have a large threaded cap and hopefully is shaped to direct back toward the house. You can work it with a manual or electric rooter. Well designed systems have clean-outs strategically placed in the waste system so you can attack it wherever there's a sharp turn. If it's a house, you may also be able to call the city, if you're on a city sewer and tell them you're drains are slow. They can check to make sure you're okay going into their line, but they probably won't work on your side.
