Question:

Any horse racing betting tips?

A girl I know is going to a horse race, and she wanted some tips. I told her to learn the bets, so she'd know how to place what she wants (learn the difference between a quinella and an exacta). I also told her she'd probably have more fun sticking to straight bets. I also told her to stay away from the long shot, cause too many people get caught up on the payout and overlook the chances of success.

She wanted more silly advice, though. She was told if there is one gray horse in a race to bet on it, but not if there's two. She's kind of superstitious like that (must be why she likes betting on horses, lol), so I wanted to know if anyone had some fun, possibly good advice on making some good bets for her.

I don't know where she's going, maybe Hot Springs?

  1. I work  in a betting shop and your friends right about grey horses they have been winning alot of races recently. But she should look @ 1's over 6/1 and back them each way meaning she still gets paid if they finish in 1st  three.  Good luck !!

  2. The only time I came away a winner at the track, I bet any horse that has "jet" in their name because that is my initials.

Have your friend do something goofy-betting the name, horse color or post position- and she will have fun. Do not learn how to read the racing program because that leads to misery.

  3. I think your friend is lucky to have someone like you to give her such good advice. Especially about warning her about the rubbish of betting horses because of their color or name. As a horseplayer I love when people do such nonsense because then I get to win more of their money.

It takes years of experience to really master handicapping but the safest course for a beginner is to stick to the top 3 or 4 favorites. The single best predictor of performance are speed figures - the Beyers are pretty good in the U.S. and Timeform is good for Europe.

Your advice about sticking to straight bets is good too. That should keep her out of trouble but as a beginner she should consider herself lucky if she doesn't lose too much money. if she's really serious she should read all she can about handicapping - Andy Beyer's books are good. She should also study all the statistics she can, though I have feeling she won't like that much. Winning at the races is a lot of hard tedious work and anyone who thinks of it as a quick get rich scheme is a sucker who will sooner or later lose a lot of money.
