Hey :D

I can ice skate and have been many times before. I can go quite fast and glide on one foot. Is there any tips to doing spins because when i start trying to do a spin i feel like i'm going to fall over, so i stop! I'd love to spin on one foot as well. Also has anyone got any tips to back ward crossovers because i can never seem to do them with out falling! Any tips would really help. Thanks! :D

  1. dont fall

  2. when you feel like you are going to fall, tilt the opposite way.. not too much to go off balance.

    :) have confidence

if you stand still on the ice, extend your arms and use those to power your spin.. that works rly well. then if you want to do a one foot one.. use your leg (not the spinning one) to push off as well as your arms. tuck you other leg in thou dont leave it sprawling around haha!

but dont be scared you wont fall over :)

    best of luck

  3. bend knees, and back straight. make sure you have your arms in the right position.

  4. Well, it would depend on which spin you are doing (e.g back spin, cross-toe, bielman etc) but a general piece of advice, assuming you are using figure skates, is to make sure you are balanced on part of the blade just behind the pick. Backward cross overs will come with practice, just make sure you are not attempting them flat footed..you will feel when you are on an edge and it will feel right.

why dont you join a class or get individual lessons?

  5. to do a spin you need to find your central point so keep trying

an easy spin is it place your right  foot slightly back and and to the side put your harms to the side of you push off of the foot you have put out and wrap it around the other leg this motion will spin you make sure you pull your arms in when you do this

  6. Practice is the key...I would wear knee pads or hockey equipment that way if you fall it won't harm you and you won't worry about falling. Small "Cs" are the best to start out backward.. Try to turn going backwards.. I used to go to the public skate at the local rink and go backwards the whole time..people look at you a little funny but it don't matter. I also notice they always have you going left,,around the rink so I try to stay in the cirles and go right. Nowadays I don't have to think about it it just happens. But there is always room for improvement..

  7. actually falling doesn't hurt if you learn to do it right.

if you do fall, fall straight on the fattest part of your butt  because it will hurt the least there and don't put your hand down first because that will hurt your wrist...basically don't try to fight gravity because your fall might hurt that much more..

that said don't be afraid of falling and don't be afraid to commit to a move ...like your backwards crossovers....bend your knees a lot ...get closer to the ice because it gives you a little more controll somehow...also if you tip over you have less space between your butt and the ice (less painful)

  8. If you are interested in figure skating you should take some lessons. It is not easy to learn a spin. It takes awhile to get use to the position (middle of the blade) sometimes people don't scratch the ice with their toe-pick or lean too far backwards then fall. You should learn how to do a forward pivot spin and getting use to the blade or a 2 foot spin before trying 1 foot spin and hurt yourself. Try to look where you are spinning, it will make the spin faster too!

When you do backward crossovers, bend your knee (to get support and to push) then cross the blade over, try to lift the other blade as soon as you get your balance (balance on 1 blade) so that both blades don't collide next to each other which will tend to make you fall. oh!! And follow the direction you are skating with your back straight and position your arms accordingly.

Hope that helps =) Goodluck =)

  9. It's really important that you not do any drinking or drugging before you skate (it impairs your abilities and kinda makes it hard to maintain balance). Also, prepare yourself for the fact that falling hurts and everybody falls. With all that in mind, just go out there and above all have fun!

  10. If you are really serious about figure skating you could consider getting a coach or having group lessons. Trust me they will really help! I have been skating for 11 years and have been to Nationals twice. To be honest to get good at things it takes a lot of practice and when you get it it is just such an amazing feeling! When I first learned a 2 foot spin I would stand in one spot and whip my arm around I was told by my coach that my one hand was a baseball and the other was the glove and to act like I threw the baseball into the glove (which helps ou to get the spinning motion) and then bring your arms in like you are hugging a teddy bear (which helps you to speed up.) when you get the hang of the 2 foot spin start picking one foot up to get use to the balance. As for backward cross overs those just take a lot of practice but you will get the hang of it and before you know it you will be doing a whole bunch of neat things. Good luck with everything! Hope I helped a little. It is hard to try to explain things writing them instead of showing =)

  11. Stick one toe in the ice and pivot around it, whichever direction is most comfortable. Try to keep your feet together, and go slowly if you need to.

As for back crossovers, don't try to lift your crossing foot (on the outside of the curve), nobody does that after like, basic 1, and its a lot eaisier that way!

  12. Yeah  for backwards crossovers push your back foot back out of the way before you cross your front leg over or you will trip yourself up.  Oh and you need to be on oposite edges of your skates too. The crossover foot needs to be on inside edge of blade, the other foot needs to be on outside edge of blade

Sorry I can't help with spins but they aren't something I do too often either.
