  1. It has happened to a fellow Marine I knew back in 2004. He graduated from high school in 2000 when he was 17 and went to boot camp. He was the honor graduate and received meritorious E3. During his first year, he passed the meritorious board and was promoted to E4. When he was 19 1/2 he went to another board and picked up Sergeant.

Imagine that? A Sergeant who can't even legally drink. I must admit, I was a bit envious.

  2. in high school it was a 12th grader who was 2LT in this ROTC program and when he graduated he went to the army as a Corporal which is close to a sergeant

  3. Not unless they have tonnes of college credits and at lest one AS or AAS degree.

    Vet-USAF

  4. None

  5. 456 19 year olds

    1,234 20 year olds

    3,453 21 year olds

  6. none that i know of, but i guess if you some how got the medal of honor by doing something heroic, then maybe

  7. Yeah, the guy above me has it.  A lot of times there are posthumous promotions.

Also, there was some 10 or 12 year old kid who had some terminal disease and his dying wish was to be in the Army so Rumsfeld had him enlisted and made a Sergeant.

  8. at the rate generals are taking early retirement (due to bush's stupid policies) he should move right on up .

  9. I did! Enlisted as a PV2(E-2) promoted to  E-5 with 1 year TIS in 1975 ( Vietnam era )

It all depends on the MOS, how well you do on the promotion board, College credits, commendations, awards, etc... and low cut-off scores for promotion to E-5

Yes, during the Vietnam conflict & Vietnam era, if you were "high speed" and made E-5 and the chain of command saw that you had potential,  you were offered and sent to OCS,

    A College degree wasn't required!

Then you had  20-21 yr old (2LT) "butter bars"!

For the morons that gave thumbs down, jealous? just answering a question with real facts, **** off !!!

  10. The time in grade/time in service requirements make it nearly impossible to make E5 in that time period.  I know as a Marine, even if you leave bootcamp as an E3 you still need 6 months time in service before you are eligible for a meritorious promotion to E4, then at least 18 months time in service before you are eligible for an E5 meritorious promotion board.  I'm not sure about the Army but I can bet their TIS requirements for meritorious promotion are about the same.  With that being said I guess if you go to boot camp at 17, leave as an E3 that creates a large enough window by Marine standards to make E5.  All in all i would say its just about impossible.

  11. No longer possible in the modern Army, however it was still quite common in Vietnam and in the Army prior to Vietnam to have teen-aged Sergeants.  In World Wars I and II as well as Korea they had what was know as 'Blood Stripes' which you earned by surviving the last engagement; Sergeant Jones got killed or seriously wounded the Corporal Smith made Sergeant and PFC Brown made Corporal right on the spot!

Harry H.Hancock III; you should have explained about the 'Shake n' Bake' program which was a form of OCS(NCOCS) for Sergeants during the Vietnam Conflict.

  12. It would take a lot of hard work. I haven't heard of anyone that young making it to SGT but I am sure that it is possible.

  13. its possible, I know when I got to my first duty station our first SGT was only 19, but I tell you what, he made sure we all knew that just because he was a year older than us, he was still in charge, we got scuffed up all the time!

He joined the Army when he was still 17 because he got his GED when he was 16.
