Question:

Any ideas about Secondary Insurance coverage?

I currently have insurance but will be having a baby and will need additional coverage. Does anyone know anything about secondary health coverage that can help cover the costs? How does it work? I am currently covered up to $10,000 per year but the delivery costs alone will be more than that. I probably need at least $20,000-25,000 total coverage for the year. I don't know if it matters, but I am not pregnant yet, just planning for it.

  1. $10,000 is way under insured. My mother had "Mutual Ins" supplement. It may be just for older people on SS. But it's worth checking on. It may be for everyone.

  2. make use of the SE like google or yahoo to get some ideas first if you want to get the massive information, however if you do not want to spend so much time, here is a direct and good resource for your questions.http://health-insurance.onlinebestoffer....

  3. Secondary insurance may or may not offer additional benefits. They do not just pick up where the primary leaves off. They usually only pay the balance up to what they would have paid if primary, so you will still be liable for a balance.

The only exception is medicaid. If you qualify for it, and your state allows you to qualify if you have other insurance (some states do not), then you will not owe a balance, provided the doctors and hospitals accept medicaid.

If the insurance you have now is part of a PPO and your providers are in-network, the $10,000 max is at the contracted rate, so will probably go further towards covering your expenses than you think.

  4. OK, well, if you're pregnant now, no one is going to write a health insurance policy on a pregnant woman.  If you aren't, that maternity rider, IF AVAILABLE, has a 9 month waiting period, before you can get PREGNANT.  And it's expensive.

What makes you think that the delivery costs will be more than $10,000?  You can do a home birth with a midwife, with all prenatal care, for under $3,000.   My OB charges with an emergency C section, for an in network provider, were under $10,000.

You will have to talk to a local agent, but I think you're going to have a hard time finding secondary coverage with a maternity rider.  And if you DO find it, it's going to cost about $500 a month.

  5. Perhaps you should look into getting a medical discount plan.  They will help with the costs since you are way under-insured.  Check out the links I provided, these plans start at only $19.95/month for your entire household AND cover pre-existing conditions, including pregnancy.  Good luck!
