Question:

Any ideas concerning a baby's room in a 3BR home (details below)? At what age do you think we should move him?

We have 3 bedrooms, one is the main bedroom (ours), the second is used as our study/office (with computers etc, and a playpen), and the third is supposed to be an extra bedroom for guests, etc, but has now become a store room (let's see, there's the swing, bouncer, pram, a cupboard full of baby supplies, fitness equipment, a keyboard, and some other junks) as we have no other place to stuff these things.

Right now, the baby is 10 month old and has a crib in our bedroom where he naps.

We're thinking about transferring the 3rd bedroom (the current store room) into his own bedroom some time after his first birthday (and that would mean we have to get rid of some of the junks).

Any idea what to put in his room? (and where to put the junks... lol)

  1. first thing to put in it would be his cot! then maybe a wardrobe and some drawers try to keep it uncluttered and get rid of the stuff you dont need ,maybe put them in the local paper or on ebay you might even get some money for them.

  2. My son, who is my 1st child was moved into his own room a week after I brought him home. It was more an issue of space because I detest feeling cramped . Which I did because of the bassinet being cramped right next to my side of the bed.

I feel it is important to get the child used to being in his own space.

Get baby monitors and you should be alright. If you are paranoid about being able to see him , there are baby monitors with black and white screens.

I  would suggest that when he is put into his own room at bedtime, use a routine that only goes on at bedtime. Before my son goes to bed I start his bedtime routine 30 minutes prior to being put into his crib. I clean him, put on a diaper one size bigger then he wears in the daytime(this keeps him from leeking and having to wash his sheets) I rub on Aveeno Lavendar and Vanilla lotion (because it does not contain mineral oil), put on his pajamas, feed him his bottle, then put him in his crib. In his crib I use the Fischer Price Rainforest Music Mobile with 3 classical music choices, nature sounds and a nightlight. The nature sounds and nightlight Only gets turned on at bedtime. Even though he is all smiles and looks awake, he knows when that nightlight goes on and he hears those noises it is bedtime. I keep the doors closed too so he is not distracted by the cats or my husband and I watching TV or talking.

In his 6 months of life he has only cried (at bedtime) maybe 4 times. if he cries past 10 minutes I pick him back up  But crying is rare because he is used to the routine.

    Get rid of the Junk!

If you donate to a thrift store you can get a tax write off slip! It is easy because they just hand you a slip and you decide how much goes on it.

Or sell on Ebay, Newspaper,Yard/Garage sale. If you two are hoarders you can clear a space in the garage if you have one, rent a storage space or put it in the corner of your office all piled up so that your Son is not forced to endure clutter.  My husband refuses to get rid of some things so I make him keep it in his office/writing area. I say " If this mess of junk does not bother you and getting rid of it is too painfull, YOU look at it 24 hours a Day".

In his room you can put all the baby items you listed as well as His changing table, crib, Toy Chest, Rocking chair, small dresser with lamp, a nightlight and music or nature sounds, curtians that are thick and dark enough to block out the sunlight in the morning and a monitor.

I also suggest as an extra- pictures hung on the wall of  colorfull relaxing scenes. I have paintings of sailboats, lighthouses  and Norman Rockwell art. That way when my son wakes up he can look at it. Or when I am rocking him or playing with him I have things to enjoy looking at as well.

  3. Sounds like most of the stuff in that 3rd bedroom is his stuff anyway. Plus, once he's a year you can figure out what he doesn't use much anymore and get rid of a lot of it. I think it's important for babys/toddlers/kids to have their own rooms.

Maybe you can go through the 3rd bedroom and the office and get rid of lots of stuff and condense it down to just one room that can be your office/storage room, so that baby gets his own.

  4. Do a car boot sale, you might make some money, in fact you DEF WOULD make some money xxxx

  5. toy cabinet (use the cupboard)

    bed/crib

    baby stuff (in a cupboard)

    and toys!

  6. If you haven't used it in 10 months freecycle or sell it.

Your child needs a place to sleep, somewhere to store clothes and a book shelf and chair for bedtime stories.

Move him in to his own room now and free up your own bedroom. Our first was evicted aged 2.5 weeks for sounding like a hedgehog and keeping everyone awake. Number two never got to our room!!

  7. Take the larger room, not yours and put computer and all 'junk in that room. Some how you have to make baby a room of his own. He will need his crib of course, changing table and a small chest of drawers for his clothes. The swing can go in the living room . I kept mine there until my baby grew out of it. If you have a foyer or front hall, you can keep his pram there. Take out the play pen and put up a door gate to the baby's room. I never used a play pen with my children. Took up too much room. Get rid of the fitness things and go to a gym or take up running or walking. Baby should have had his own room when he was 6 weeks old, but all parents are different. Go through your junk and see what you can live without. An attic is nice if you have one. The bouncer can stay in baby's room when not in use.
