Any ideas for Algebra and Geometry icebreakers for High Schoolers?

  1. There's a book that relates math to practical solution of everyday problems. Relevance is a powerful motivator for the student.

I just use traditional ones.  I find it works better if I get them in pairs.  I give them a piece of paper and pass around some crayons and markers.  They are to draw on the paper 3 things they did over the summer or their favorites.  I give them about 5 minutes to do this and then they introduce each other.  The paper with the drawings helps them feel more comfortable because they have something to hold and they aren't as self conscious because they are introducing someone else.  In the long run it also gives them a friend in the class.  Before I do the activity I introduce myself in the same way, with a picture.

    A lot of my teacher friends just give a placement test on the first day but I like to do an icebreaker.
