jukebox/or fifties music is a vital part of any fifties party. Rent a jukebox or create a pretend jukebox for looks and spin records on a stereo. Create balloon arches with white and pink balloons. Dangle 45s/records from the center.

Some great cars were introduced in the 1950s, a 57' Chevy, real or constructed can be a good focal point. Use the complete Rock n Roll music decorating kit for your 1950s sock hop party supplies!Hang giant records/posters on the wall with your favorite artist from the fifties. Create pretend soda shop billboards and place your actual menu for the party on it.

    1950s Party/Sock Hop Themed Activities

A dance contest, once it gets going, is always good for lots of laughs. Start with easy dance steps and encourage everyone to try. Play Name That Tune using old fifties songs – extra points are given to the team that can name the title and the artist/group. Create a list of products – ask guests to guess its price now Vs the price in 1950s. The team with the closest guesses wins. For older children or teens, have female guests make poodle skirts. Using felt cut the material into a circle. In the center of the circle, cut a second hole for the waste. Use a pin to secure the size of the waste, or attach a piece of wide elastic using a sewing machine. Have the girls cut out records and write on names, or cut out fuzzy poodles (check old dog books for poodle designs). Attach the cut outs with a low-temp glue gun or fabric glue. http://www.reasontoparty.com/sock_hop.ht...

    Decorations

The best color combination for your fifties party decorations would be teal, pink and black.

Decorate your front yard with balloons and streamers in before-mentioned colors. Decorate you front door with a banner "Welcome to Big Al's (or name of your choice) Diner!" Draw any 50s theme items (e.g. cars, jukebox, album records, etc) on the banner to make it look more authentic!

Hang old album records from the ceiling. Place old pictures around your fifties party area. You can also use musical instruments or music note decorations to go on the walls. Cover the floor with balloons in coordinating colors. Also, if you have any old memorabilia - spread it around your room.

Have some fun with your party table area. Hang 50s theme posters on the walls (e.g. soda drinks, hamburgers, hot rod cars, etc.) Cover the table with checkered tablecloth. Put catsup, mustard, and relish bottles on the table. Have classic soda glasses for everyone.

Hang Saxophone Mylar balloon as a centerpiece in the middle. Cut out Coke signs from the Coca-Cola box and spread the signs around the table. You can create price tags for all your food items. For example, root beer floats can be 10 cents, burgers - 15 cents, etc.

Play music of Elvis, Buddy Holly, or Grease Soundtrack in the background.

  2. Old records, soda fountain/shop decor, 50s music, poodle skirts, greasers, preps with sweaters

  3. Hula Hoop Contests! ... maybe Yo-Yo contests too...  Make it a "Sock Hop", and everyone wears white sox (no shoes).  (We actually did that to protect the floors in the school gym) ....  Hamburgers, fries, cokes, Grape Nehi and Orange Crush,  milkshakes, brownies, and, of course, you have to have at least one Jello Mold! .....School pennants (school spirit was very popular) .....Get Chubby Checkers "The Twist" and Little Eva's "Mashed Potatoes", so you can dance to them;  "Theme from a Summer Place" was a huge hit then too - Elvis records.  Going into the very early 60's, get some Dion, Frankie Avalon, Fabian and Bobby Rydell records - put some album covers around as decorations... "I Like Ike" buttons & posters.....  See if you can find reruns of "Happy Days" on tv, to watch it for ideas........
