Hi everyone.

My youngest son is turning one on July 5. He loves to play outside so we decided to have a BBQ birthday for him outside in the backyard. It will be a small party just my family and my husbands parents and brothers, about 20 people total. Does anyone have any good food suggestions or recipes. So far on the list we have hamburgers, brisket, hot dogs (for the little ones), chicken b*****s, potato salad, baked beans, a fruit medley, and banana pudding. Oh and of course, birthday cake. I really need some more sides I think. Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks for all the help!!

  1. how about a veggie tray that has cauliflower, olives, carrots, pickles, etc.   also you could serve some fresh fruit and juice or lemonade to drink

  2. Make some sort of hot potato.. Baked pot., cheesy potato casserolle..

Or how about some deviled eggs?

  3. Just do BBQ Pork Sandwiches for the meats.

    CHOPPED PORK SANDWICHES

    1 6-7 lb Pork Roast (Boston Butt/Shoulder)

    Demon Pig BBQ Rub

2 bottles "Demon Pig BBQ Sauce"

Trim Excess fat from roast. Sprinkle with Demon Pig BBQ Rub.

Cook on grill with indirect heat at 225/250 degrees for 6 hours to an internal temp of 160 degrees. (This can be done in an oven or bbq smoker.)

Place in pan with 1/2 cup water, cover and place back on heat for one hour to finish, 190F internal temp. Remove from heat, let stand 30 minutes. Careful uncover. Let stand an additional 15 minutes.

Pull and chop meat to just under bite size pieces.

Warm "Demon Pig BBQ Sauce" slightly and mix thoroughly until lightly covered throughout meat. Serve additional sauce warm on the side.

Serve on buns with your favorite sides.

  4. Where are the veggies? I know a lot of people on diets and also with the warmer weather people tend to like light and refreshing foods.

    My Famous Confetti Pasta Salad

Corkscrew pasta cooked up until aldente and set aside

marinated artichoke hearts cut up and juice set aside

    sliced black olives

can of diced mild green chilis

    shredded carrots

    finely chopped celery

    grape tomatoes cut in half

finely chopped red and yellow bellpeppers

    fav italian dressing

    mayo

    mustard

Take all the ingredients and mix into pasta- salt and pepper to taste

Add in as a dressing mayo, mustard, italian dressing, and some of the leftover juice from marinated artichoke hearts.

Let set overnight in fridge for flavors to marry.

Even my younger nephews loved this one.

You can even add in cooked shrimp or chicken tastes awesome.

You can do some dips and fresh veggies

    A macaroni and cheese dish

Mix up jiffy cornbread and ad in sourcream-diced mild green chilis and cheddar cheese- this is a huge hit and expecially with the bbq stuff.

I say forgo the potato salad and go for some other kids of salads. Potato salad has been overdone and I think people would enjoy having something different as you are doing with the brisket.

Another yummy bread is to take some large french bread loaves and cut them length wise in half and put on cookie sheet

Spread a mixture of grated cheddar and pepperjack cheeses along with a little mayo and bake onto bread. You can top them with a little paprika for color.

Take little cherry tomatoes and cut open the tops and fill with a dill dip. You can buy it already made.

A nice big green salad and top with mandarin oranges, yellow and red bell peppers, sliced toasted almonds, shredded carrots and top with a raspberry vinagrette.

You can also grill some wonderful veggies or make veggie kabobs for the bbq.

Do some grilled pinapple that have been sitting overnight in some brown sugar. These would be wonderful for the chicken. YUMMY!!

  5. Don't forget some kind of punch... something quick and easy?Believe it or not, gingerale with fruit drink of somekind. Wrap some cut potatoes, wedges work best, cut onion (slices are easy) margerine, and spices you like. Season salt maybe. Don't be too afraid to spice it good, most will fall off. Wrap it like you would a sandwich in waxed paper. The more the potatoes the bigger the wrap. Throw it on the grill before you start everything. It can stay on there for about 1/2 hr to 45 min.You don' have to flip it, watch it , nothing except dump it the plates. You can cook corn on the cob that way too, just add butter!
