Any ideas for a short story about a German family?

I'm writing a short story and don't have a clue what to write about. I want the family to be German because they seem funny but I need a semi-depressing turn of events and and unexpected ending...Got any ideas?

Carmelo comes to America in 1901,,,as ah young lad he finds work in New york buildin the tunnels and sub ways ,,,he writes home and says he's got money ,and will send for the girl who promissed to him through the family,,,but first he must send money to her parents and prove he is worthy to wed her ,,,after 2 years he has sent enough money to her parents to come back across the ocean to get her ,,,when he arrives he finds out that daughter was given in marrage only 3 months earlier ,,,through ah lot of trials ,and being hurt so deep the father says he can wed her sister ,,,and with regret he takes her and goes back to america,,,still hurt he goes back to work and his anger  keeps him goin nite and day ,,,then ,,,he,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,... nick,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
