Any ideas for a unique, special Birthday cake for my ONE-year old? (ideal for a big party too)?

My daughter will be one, in 2 months time. We are planning a huge party but the problem is the cake. I want it to be really unique and special. Not anything too tacky, but somethin either I can make myself or some other kind of cake that is suitable for a one year old! It also has to feed around 50odd people that are comin to the party and ideally have some left for people who couldnt make it etc.

None of those cheesy, typical birthday cakes they have in shopping stores!

any ideas would be greatly aprreciated, Thanks.

  1. my sister made a cake that was shaped as a baby bottle and put blue frosting on it with a white nipple and it say happy first

  2. one of the nicest things to do for a little one is a cupcake tower. Look and ebay and buy a cupcake stand (the best and cheapest one to get is made of cardboard). You can then decorate the stand in her favourite colours and make cakes in coordinating colours and cases. This takes the pressure off you a little because if you ruin the decoration on one cake, you can just toss it away rather than try and salvage it like you would have to with a big cake. You can pile on edible glitter, sanding sugar, sweeties, sprinkles etc to make them look impressive for the guests but really fun for her.The other advantage of a cupcake tower is that you can be sure there is enough cake for everyone and that everyone gets the same portion size (really important for kids parties as it saves squabbling!)

I have my own little on line bakery and I do cakes like this a lot for kids' parties. The most recent one I did was a princess themed cake for a 4 year old girl. They always look super impressive and are really quite easy to make once you have prepped the stand

You can get most of the things you need from ebay or www.makeawishcakeshop.co.uk quite cheaply. I found the best thing to decorate the stand with is a non toxic spray paint and sparkly trimmings from a haberdashery.

I hope this helps and good luck!

  3. Have some fun and bake your very own home made cake! If you really want it to be special then make it bright and colourful - put some action figurine sticks on the top of her favourite cartoon characters.

Don't make it so 'wow' that it's just over the top make it simple and nice. Something everyone will like - a classic victorian sponge maybe?

  4. Well the coolest cake I saw was a Barbie Doll cake - the doll's dress was the cake, so once it was eaten you got to keep the doll afterwards :)

a lot of specialist Bakeries make them, check it out online.

If your from Glasgow, there's one up the top of Sauchiehall Street that does special cakes like that (If your not sorry, it's the only local one i know!)

    Good luck :)

  5. I have 3 grandkids under 4-1/2, so we've had a few 1st birthdays lately (the youngest was 1 in July).  My daughter always gets a big cake, and then a miniature cake (a little replica of the big one) for the birthday person to dig into (and get all those cute photos) It's not that they eat so much, but they have so much fun playing with it and spreading it all around:) ...... She's always had an upscale bakery do them, although she gets cupcake cakes for later birthdays (since it's easier to serve and easier for kids to eat).   It it's a girl, you could do a big butterfly (putting different cake pans together to make it), or a giant flower ... if it's a boy, you could do a fire engine or Elmo, or whatever he likes.  Or, you could do a bunch of round cakes, frosted in different bright colors, and attach them with long licorice strands, to look like a big bunch of balloons.......

  6. For my sons first birthday i made a chocolate cake for him (and forty others lol) i got some rolling icing and mixed it with green football colouring for the football pitch and then i got candle footballs and put them on the top, i also put white icing on it to mark out the penalty areas, goal posts, etc.

Making it yourself is so much better, why don't you get some of the roll out icing, pink food colouring, roll it accross the top of the cake and put a tiara on it, or something girly and fluffy.  Tesco and sainsburys do quite good little birthday cake candle ideas, maybe you could look there. Good luck!!

  7. For a first birthday party we always used two cakes.

    1) Would be a simple round cake with coloured icing sugar and a single candle on it.

This cake would be the child's "own personal cake".

We would allow the 1 year old to smash, mash, and mess with it.

It is such fun, especially later on in years to come when you look at the video again.

    2) The second will be a special cake, usually made out of card board, and painted.

It is a fancy box really which contains various cup cakes, coconut flavoured marshmallows and so on...

That would be for the guests to enjoy.

    Here is an idea...

Take for instance a cardboard and cut out battlements to look like a castle.

Bring the four sides together and inside, put the cookie/cup cake filling.

Now you can decorate the outside to look like a real medieval castle or fort by painting it, and pasting sweets, cookies and licorice on the outside...

    It can look really special...

  8. http://jirehcakes.com/slides/1%20(One)%2... you can make more than one of these in different colors

  9. do you remember you 1st birthday? neither do i

the birthday will be more for you than your baby, just take LOTS of pictures

  10. For one of my little ones I made a toadstool cake. Using a medium heatproof mixing bowl/basin and a wide empty can (washed well of course). Bake your cake mix in both these containers then turn out and put one on top of the other to make a toadstool. Stick together with some jam and decorate with coloured icing. If you can find some little model or card fairies, you can make or paint an icing door and make it a proper fairy house!  As you are feeding quite a number of people I would suggest getting another (plain or fruit) cake for cutting up. Little children will only want a small piece of cake and adults might want something more sophisticated anyway.  Enjoy

  11. Look for a place that does 3-cakes.  There is a place in West Hollywood called cake and art. Not only do they do great cakes, they taste really good and moist.  They did my son's 1st and 2nd birthday cake.  First one was 3-d elmo. I believe they do shipments if you don't live out here.

  12. Do a small, single layer cake for her to play in. Frost and decorate it according to your theme.  Then just do cupcakes for everyone else. You can top each with a little decoration.  To display, put the cake for your daughter in the middle of a table with a tablecloth. Under the cloth, stack cups, cans of vegetables, and other items all around to create different heights. Place the cupcakes all around the table on the various heights.

  13. My idea has already been mentioned at least once, so I'm guessing it is no longer unique!  Here goes anyway:  we went to a party for a one-year old recently.  They had made a cupcake for each guest and piled them all on a stand (they made it themselves but you can buy them).  The cupcakes were in metallic silver cases and frosted with yellow or pink icing and then decorated with handmade icing flowers.  It looked spectacular!

Some other ideas - one year I made a cake shaped like a tiara and covered it in yellow fondant icing then decorated it with "jewel" sweets.

For both first birthdays I made a cake shaped as a 1 and covered it in really gooey chocolate!  My children loved it and we have brilliant pictures of them covered in chocolate!

We often make a fancy cake for blowing out the candles etc but have a second plainer cake for putting into the party bags.  By the time is cut up people don't know that it isn't the cake they saw get whisked into the kitchen for chopping.

I've made the Barbie cake - it is massive and looks really impressive.  You can decorate it however you want - colour of dress etc or make it into a mermaid sat on a rock.  The only problem is that it is really hard to cut so that everybody gets a bit of icing rather than just a lump of sponge.  We put the spare cake to good use here and ended up using all the sponge from the middle of the Barbie as trifle sponge.

  14. One thing you need to remember is that one year olds really won't eat the cake so you want to make the taste suitable for the rest of the guests. Yes she will eat a little bit (the boy I babysit is 1 and he only takes a couple bites off a cupcake that I feed him) but probably only a couple nibbles. I suggest that if you have a nickname for her or if there's something she really likes (like cartoon wise), have someone make the cake in that shape with a really good inside and a really good frosting. You can try the cakes before hand so I reccommend you do that.
