Question:

Any ideas for building a temporary wall/partition in a bedroom?

We need to build a temporary wall/partition in our master-bedroom. Does anyone have any ideas of what to use, how to start, using cheaper materials. This needs to be as sound-proof as possible. We are having to move our son (16mos) out of his room and bring him into ours. My father-in-law is moving back with us. At a later time when we can afford we will build on an addition - this is just something for a quick-fast-cheap fix. Something that is easy to assemble up and down when need to. Biggest thing is $$ - but isn't it for everyone! Thank you in advance for your help.

  1. Buy a standing wall partition screen the type people used to dress behind. They come in all heights. Try Home Depot.

  2. how about folding panels with the panel inserts being insulating foam.  build the frames out of 1x1.

    inexpensive, unique, could be artsy

  3. Best solution is timber frame and plasterboard with insulation in between - two layers are better still. Plasterboard is quite cheap for waht you get - but any building involves spending money, I'm afraid.  If you can find a source of shuttering ply that might be cheaper or OSB board, if you are not fussed what it will look like in the short term. Make sure you don't conrtavene any regs whilst you are doing this, though. Otherwis you might get away with hardboard on timber with the voids stuffed with rockwool insulation.

You might investigate alternative materials like rigid insulation which is cheap if you are not expecting it to be overly durable - which might do away with the need for much  in the way of timber, which can be the pricey bit. Glue or tape a couple of layers together and seal all round - tape joints with gaffer tape and paint over. Expect to pay something like £10-11 a square metre plus finishing.

Taking anything up and down is unlikely to give you any soundproofing. You could try making up hinged panels of 2 x 1 stuff with hardboard (masonite) facings - but you may need to plant something on the ceiling to close on to.
