Any ideas for finding someone willing to do walk-through of my garden & identify plants?

Have a new house with many plantings front and back yard. Communication with previous owner has been difficult. I would love to find a volunteer who would walk through the garden areas with me to name and label the various species there. I want to weed, but love wildflowers and such, and don't want to take out something of interest. I know I can go to my local university with plant leaves for help with identification, but with so many, it would be a long and tedious process.

By the way, my geographic location is northeastern Connecticut. thank you.

  1. Send some photos to this email address and I will get one of my connections to help out - he's an author of garden design books.

    maresa@maresaesmee.co.uk

Sorry we can't visit - we're in the UK!

  2. Have you thought of contacting  your local chapter of Master Gardeners or your local county extensions office I think it would be a great learning tool for all of you (if you were closer I would love to do a walk through since I am a Master Gardener but it is just too far from Connecticut to Montana.) Good Luck!

  3. Here are some other resources, some that I know of as a Connecticut resident, some that I researched on the web:

    CONNECTICUT HERB ASSOCIATION:

    http://www.ctherb.org/

NETWORKING PAGE FOR CT HERB ASSOC, with

list of member websites and a yahoo networking group where you could ask questions:

    http://www.ctherb.org/networking.htm

PAM BRUNDAGE, A MEMBER OF THE HERB ASSOCIATION, whom  i know personally and who does "weed walks" in your own back yard:

This one I found through research, info about a GARDEN CLUB in Mansfield CT:

    http://www.biblio.org/mansfield/Communit...

    Garden Gate Club of Mansfield

Try googling "garden club" and other town names in your area also to see if they have similar organizations.

  4. Some times I come up with great answers - Go to the nursing home in your area and take some ladies out who have been gardening all their lives. Their knowledge is the best one can get. You'll get a squishy feeling inside knowing your taking her out for a walk in your garden and listening to her experience - she will love you for it as well and chances are great that you will make a great friend.

  5. What you need is a garden coach.  This is an excellent website that lists qualified Horticulturists and garden designers from all over:

  6. A Master Gardener would probably be able to identify most of your plants.  Connecticut has a Master Gardener program and the is probably a local Horticultural Society.

  7. seek a horticulture consultant

  8. call yourCounty Extension office and see if any of the Master Gardeners there would like to come over and give you a hand with this.... I know there's several at ours who would be happy to help... have some tea handy!....
